<TD ="article">A training ground injury has forced Mick O'Driscoll to withdraw from the Munster side ahead of Sunday's clash with Connacht at Thomond Park. O'Driscoll injured an ankle and is expected to be out of action until the New Year.

His place in the Munster side goes to Paul O'Connell with Chris Wyatt drafted into the replacements.

Meanwhile, Christian Cullen, who is set to make his first start since injuring a shoulder against Ulster at the end of September is no longer considered an 'overseas' player having been resident in this coutry for the past three years.

Sorry for Mick, obviously the team is not weakened with POC coming in but it leaves our bench short on cover until MOD is back, and over the christmas period if the irish camps take away POC and DOC.

Also, on the overseas player rule - what exactly is the restriction and who has decided it?

Thats a shame for MOD, was really looking for him to make a challenge
for a wc place. Hope the injury isnt as bad as feared and that he will
be back before too long.

Overseas only refers to non-EU and non-Kolpak counties, people like Mafi and Halstead are considered Kolpaks and are OK, McGann, Cullen and Manning aren't covered by it (though I vaguely recall someone saying he has/can get an Irish passport?).

EDIT: Cullen is no longer an over-seas player as he's been resident for 3 years, thanks to the almost deadsite.

Bad luck on Micko. Also hard on PoC - reckon he could have done with a breather in the run-in to the HEC games. Hope Micko recovers soon.

Anyone got more details on what happened/what the injury is?

If he's out for a month it could be a ligament strain or a bad sprain.

Bad news for Micko but good news for Cully, it'll reduce the number of foreign players in the squad.

Micko being out until the New year is bad news - are the Irish Squad being called up again around Christmas - will we have any ML games besides the clash with Leinster?

It`s a disaster for Micko-The guy has had it tough. Brought to NZ but didn`t play, wasn`t allowed play at the start of the season and lost his squad place and now injured.

Can someone put together what is an Overseas player and what is a home based player, so we can reference that for future use in the Fan Directory ?

Any chance of resurrecting my myths thread from the old site, and I'll make a couple of amendments.

Its simple enough. A foreign player is someone who is not entitled to play in the EU.

The main ways of being entitled to play here are:

1) Birth, born in an EU country. (Kyraciou)

2) Residency, have been leaving in a specific eu country for more than three years. (Cullen)

3) Parentage. You may be eligible for a EU passport through parents or grandparents. (McGann ???, Freddie P)

4) Work agreements, if the country you are from has a work agreement
with the EU then you are entitled to work here. This is the Kolpak
clause, effectively all rugby

nations with the exception of Argentina, Australia and New Zealand.

1. HEC Qualification (a):
Ireland are only guaranteed 2 places in the HEC.
Ireland are guaranteed 3 places in the HEC, even if the four provinces lost every HEC game and every CL game. We would still have three teams in the HEC the following year.
2 HEC Qualification (b):
Connacht cannot qualify for the HEC.
Connacht could qualify for the HEC if they finish within the top three Irish sides in the CL. Equally if they finish above the bottom placed welsh and scottish sides, they would qualify for a play off with the third ranked Italian side.
3. Parker Pen Participation
There is a myth that Ireland must have a team in the Parker Pen, this was a fact 2 years ago. But is no longer the case. Wales have not had a side in the PP for 2 years. The two teams in the CL which do not qualify for the HEC will play in the PP. This year those two sides are Connacht and the PP.
4. The two foreigner rule.
While not a complete myth the understanding of it is. The definition of a foreigner for the sake of the competition is someone who is not qualified to work in the EU. So people coming from countries with a work treaty with the EU areperfectly entitled to play in the HEC and are not restricted by this rule.
South Africa has a work treaty with the EU, so a side could play 15 south africans and still not break this rule. NZ, ARG and Oz do not have this work treaty, their players can be excluded by this rule.
For more info on this myth check out the Slovak handballer case.

5) All Leinster forwards are sh*te.
This is a myth, Fergus Slattery in the seventies wasnt completely hopeless. bit of a gobshoite though
6) The GAA are evil ba***rds who eat their own children.
Not true, they sometimes get confused with Ulster fans for whom the above is true.
<DIV>7) Declan Kidney will bring us to Heineken Cup glory.</DIV>
<DIV>Not true. He didn't do it before with an arguably better squad and he has shown nothing this time around to prove that he will do any better with the squad hehas now. His selections are poor at times and his inability to make substitutions when needed has already hurt us.</DIV>
<DIV> People on Munsterfans.com actually know anything about rugby</DIV>

9) that Girvan Dempsey is an international quality full back.

Apparently in dublin, you can say this without people thinking you are some kind of crackpot.

10) you are liable to catch any one of dysentery, cholera or trachoma going to the jax behind the east terrace in thomond park

untrue. while poor sanitation is the cause of 80% of all diseases in developing countries, such cases in ireland have been practically inexistent since the famine.

11) That Girvan Dempsey has nothing on eddie o sullivan.
While this is clearly a myth, its very difficult to prove, however there may be a truth in the rumour that at an April Fools training session in 2001 Swerve said the words 'All is known' to Cooder. since then the fear has driven cooder to select the one legged hairless wonder incessantly in any position on the park.
