    Munster Squad 2018/19

With our season officially over and we turn our thoughts to next year I was wondering if the rumour mill has started yet?

Zeebs gone but a good replacement coming in. Arno Botha and Tadhg Beirne are on the way - just a shame GG is going..... Beirne is going to be massive for us.

The big question for me is what we do at ten? I am ever hopeful Tyler comes back but alot of talk about Joey Carbery. Looks like a good solid lad but I am not convinced he is the proven out half we need - we have plenty potential down here - what we need is a proven ERC top tier standard out half. However, my main issue is that the lad seems settled where he is. If he doesn’t want to come he shouldn’t be forced to and Munster should never be a second choice for anybody in my opinion. Conway came down with the right attitude and he is now “more Munster than the Munster themselves” - if Joey is forced to come he won’t enjoy it and ultimately that is what it is all about.

    Anyway, let the nonsense begin!

45 man squad as it stands

    N Scannell, Marshall, O'Byrne, Sherry
    Kilcoyne, J Cronin, O’Connor
    J Ryan, Archer, Scott, Parker
    Kleyn, Beirne, Holland, O'Shea, Wycherley
    P O'Mahony, O'Callaghan, Botha
    Cloete, O’Donnell, Oliver
    Stander, O'Donoghue,
    Murray, Hart, Williams, N Cronin
    Bleyendaal, Keatley, B Johnston
    R Scannell, Hanrahan, Goggin
    Farrell, Arnold, Taute
Haley, Earls, Conway, Sweetnam, R O'Mahony, Wootton, Fitzgerald, Nash

No official confirmation on Loughman yet. Got his contract extended to the end of the season and was ahead of Parker for a couple of B&I Cup games. Can’t see us having 8 fully contracted props though, so I reckon he’s off.

3 players in the final year of the academy this year too, so could be a lot of lads playing AIL if we are lucky with injuries.

Would love to see a serious addition at THP and Lock. Think we need to increase our bulk in our squad. Having said that Knox could fit the bill at THP, time will tell. I’d worry if Klyen got injured. Will be missing a lot of mass in that second row

We’ll hardly sigh a 5th tighthead though? Given the size of the squad we have I can’t see anybody else signing (Carberry) unless the IRFU pull off some mad outhalf merry go round.

Fineen has the raw components, just needs to get into the panels a bit more this coming season

Hopefully Beirne can bring his form from Wales over here but will how we play differently to Scarlets affect that??

Serious addition isnt really needed in the second row with Beirne being added and able to play there.

Loughman did very well in the games I saw- but Parker did a very decent job at a higher level- I’d be hanging onto both if I could- but Parker has really serious potential -

Loughman covers both sides which is always useful. Had a decent B&I Cup campaign too.
With 7 props signed up, 2 more in the academy and Scott also able to cover both sides, is Jeremy really needed?

Beirne, Botha and Cloete are turnover machines. Very few teams getting at us in the breakdown.

Unless munster's style changes we probably won't see beirne at his best. The sort of open field interplay that scarlets are known for isn't really 'us' but having said that, great player. If joey Carberry doesn't want us, that's fine by me. Kleyne fitness would be a concern. Hopefully fineen will progress further, more bulk needed I would have thought?

And James Cronin is making it an important part of his game also

True. Mind you the pack isn't really the concern. It's the skills passing interplay kicking the ball away and 10. These are the concerns and I wonder how these haven't really improved despite all the hours of training by JVG and Co this season.

If I had 500k to invest in the munster squad I'd be getting a Lancasteresque coach, investment in coaching would pay the greatest dividends imo. No slight on JVG who I'm interested to see a full season of, but most big teams now have a larger coaching panel than us.

Well we have a head coach, defence coach, attack coach and forwards coach. I’m sure a couple of specialist lads in the background too. That’s not that small a group.

                            What’s the norm these days?

I’m fairly happy with our squad to be honest. Some real quality and depth in most places and I feel that a bit of luck with injuries is often the difference between winning and losing silverware.

Main gap is at OH. If Tyler gets fit I’d be happy with him as first choice, Bill as our development option getting plenty of Pro14 experience, and Keats as solid back up. If not I’d love us to sign a quality experienced 10 for a couple of years (but we won’t be allowed).

Other gap is back-up to Murray. Neither Hart nor Williams is quite good enough IMHO. They’re not terrible but I’d like somebody better.
