So he has a real opportunity to get the starting 10 berth, which probably couldn't be said if he had stayed with you, particularly with Carberry there.
He’s very good. You’re getting a bit of a gem IMHO. I fear we’ll regret keeping JJ and Tyler but would have been very hard to keep him long term with Joey here anyway.

That means only one of two possibilities:

      or

2/. He simply wasn't good enough to merit selection.
I’m not sure it’s quite as clear cut. I just don’t think there was enough ‘data’ to decide the pecking order between JJ and TB- even within the last couple of months it looked like TB had nosed ahead, the last few weeks looks to me like JJ is now ahead. For me what this means is that they are level pegging, really, there probably won’t be a decisive lead held for any extended time by either. While this is unresolved JC remains unchallenged for the top spot- and no one behind the JJ/TB tie can leap frog two positions in the pecking order. It would have been harsh, I think, not to renew TB, and there would have been outrage had JJ been let go. Keats is now in the past, but it’s only months ago- the queue was even longer.

I think its because Carberry has re signed for another 2 years and hopefully sees his future long term here .tyler and JJ also cover centre as well as 10.
sorry to see Bill J go ,fine player wish him all the best
Still there's a light I hold before me

Ulster have added another former provincial rival to their squad for next season, this time swooping to sign Munster's young out-half Bill Johnston.

Leinsters 4th choice only incoming by the looks of things. Thats pretty bleak in fairness. Munster having to working off limited resources but why have a fit specialist seven
and not even have him on the bench at worst. Josh V Flier was excellent but Munster's team selection made it easier for him. Free reign on the ground.

I don't think your could afford to have Cloete on the bench as he only covers one position whereas JOD covers 6,7 and 8.
When things go wrong, blame McGahan

Yes, Vdf was faster around the pitch and had the strength to battle against Munsters backrow. Not to start with a natural 7 was a big mistake. It was an odd selection as CJ is a 6 or 8 .
If Cloete wasnt deemed good enough to start at the weekend why is he at Munster ?
Leinster have Tomane and his been poor . If your a NIQ you should be good enough to start matches when fit. Thats not the case with Cloete and Botha. I'd rather one great player that two squad players

When their numbers dwindled from 50 to 8, the other dwarves began to suspect Hungry

Exactly. Also overlooked for the Edinburgh and Saracens games. If he is totally out of favour then its a waste of a contract. He was brilliant last season.

Cloete was probably the difference in beating Benetton. He was a real thorn in their side.

I'm happy enough seeing only McCarthy coming next season. It's coaching that's needed. There are also plenty of fringe players waiting for an opportunity.

I don’t think he is ‘totally out of favour’- just a choice of horses for courses- and not necessarily the right one (as things turned out). We went for bulk/power runners, hence Botha starting and JOD on the bench. Unfortunately that sacrificed possession we might have turned over with Cloete. I was think the other day that it seemed quite a while since our jackeling was winning regular turnovers/penalties.

That’s not to deny the overall point about NIQ needing to be nailed on starters.

I’m not particularly happy with McCarthy coming in- I don’t see what problem he is the solution to- but agree about lack of incoming- we need the new coaching ticket to work out what we have, and how we intend to play, and then hire appropriately. It’ll be a funny season next year- but may be ideal for things to bed in.

Coaching and a more suitable game plan. We do not have the pack to play the way we are playing against Saracens. We saw that two years ago in Dublin and more or less a mirror image in Coventry. Kicking the ball back to the likes of Liam Williams. Absolutely pointless.
