Is the HEC’s difficulty ML opportunity?

If the HEC is scrapped for next season or at least devalued (i.e. playing Semi-Pro English teams) could this be the oppertunity th ML has nedded to really establish itself as a top European club competition?

Less players will be rested for more inportant upcoming fixtures which means we will see more half to full strength teams being fielded which along with the scrapping of Borders will lead to a much more competitive league with maybe even a knock-out stage finish to it. This new, more attractive league would attract higher crowds which would help to make up ror revenue lost from the HEC as well asexposing more younger players to high pressure games.

I can't see why playing against Leinster, Osperys or LLanelli in a magners League semi or final wouldn't attract as big acrowd and hypeas a HEC quarter final or maybe even semi final.

With proper squad rotation it would be possible to reintroduce a Celtic Cup with Italian sides to make up for the missing Welsh. More games = more money + Improved standard of "squad" players.

While it may not be anattractiveoption as previous seasons I don't really forsee the financial and quality of rugbydoomsday that all the punditsseem to be predicting. Celtic fans will rally around their respective clubs and the ML would definately take a big step up instandard.

Yes I think it is. You only need to look at the quality of rugby being
produced by the Scarlets to see that there really is a product there to
be sold. Ironically this crisis may be a catalyst to make the WRU/IRFU
realise that they need to work to make the ML a 100% sucess. The IRFU
needs to take the ML more seriously as the likes of Blanco, Eng clubs
& others will pull the plug anytime it suits.
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again (like picking Gordon D'Arcy) and expecting different results.

BS , DON'T PUT A SHAMBLIC PLAY OFF SYSTEM IN!

The Top 8 for a CUP as before was great !

The best team MUST be rewarded for a years work, espeically now the teams will be full strength.

If anything , it will be a relief to finally have a competition that flows for 18 weeks, then have 4 weeks of a knock out cup in the ML.

If the EDF cup can be a pre season comp, all the better.

The ML can then have a break in Dec or Jan or even tour OS

6 Nations is in Feb and March and the cup to finsish the season off

Maybe the ML teams should look at playing some internationals like Russia , Portugal, Spain and Holland

The point I was making about the knock out stages is that it creates a bit more excitement at the end of the season, which would be needed without the HEC.

For example the AIB Division One would be wrapped up by Con at this stage but there is still five teams in with a realistic chance at the end of the season.

I think Play Offs would be a good addition to the comeptition, yes the league winners wopuld still get a reward but it would make for a great end to season.

Give the first place team a quarter final against 8th and home advantage in that game and the semi, if they make it.

I think that's a pipe dream. the scottish and italian sides are so poor they add nothing. So you're effectively left with a welsh/irish combination that doesn't have enough variety nor the finanical muscle to make it a viable commodity long term. you can't argue with the sort of cash that the french/english clubs bring- that's what finances the players. without them we're screwed.

There are no Italian teams in the ML that I'm aware of and as for
scottish sides, Edinburgh are a pretty decent outfit (equal to any
french or Eng mid table side at least). they won home & away (I
believe) against Munster in the ML and we had a full team for the home
game + beat Leinster in HEC so they cant be that bad. Scarlets,
Ospreys, Cardiff are big teams with big fan & player bases. In fact
add in the 3 Irish provinces (+ Connaucht are making some good
signings) & I think team for team it is at least the equal if not
superior to the French T14 (where you've loads of also rans like
Narbonne, Albi etc) & English GP.

Of course it'll never replace the HEC nor will the GP or T14 (Laporte
& Ashton will be very worried abou their players not playing in the
HEC) . It's just a higher level to domestic level in every country.
Hopefully it'll be sorted but if there is no HEC next year it'll be a
good opportunity for the IRFU/WRU/SRU to get their bread & butter
comp in order which may have benefits in the long term

Definitely Semi final and Final playoffs in the ML is the way to go. It provides another stage at the end of the season and equalises the mid season squad drain. This must happen.

The idea of it all needs to be sown and grown. It needs huge marketing and selling. If there's proof it can be done , it's the fact that most would refer to the European cup as the Heineken Cup. So Magners get your fingers out! Please, Please, Please and lets have a whole new battle to plan.

we could do like the GP used to where the top team is rewarded for being first by going straight to the final and the second and third teams play each other to go to the final

I reckon we should keep the straight league format and invite the Italians to participate in an end of season cup competition. Might not be as interesting as the HEC but nothing could be. Unless/until the French and English pull their heads out of their arses that's the best we can do.
