Such a pity this is clashing (date wise) with our away game to Edinburgh.

Great to see the games being moved around the province.

      Academy Update
      7 October 2013, 6:48 pm
      By The Editor

In the build-up to Saturday's opening British and Irish Cup game v Stirling County in Bandon RFC we commence our monthly academy updates for the season by catching up with Elite Player Development Manager and Munster A Head Coach Peter Malone.

      First Year Academy Players....
“They are all good now, settling in well. Most of them were involved with the U20s squad and the U19s so they’ve trained hard over the summer, went through the Interpro series and they are now getting back into the routine of academy training, college and club rugby. The young guys are all fit and ready to go.”

      Pre-Season Training….

“Johnny Holland, Rory Scannell and Shane Buckley, to name a few, were some of the guys that were training with the senior squad for the summer which was a great opportunity for them, and they all took their chances. As things happen, everything tightens up as you get closer to Heineken Cup rugby but certainly the academy players will come in and out of the senior squad when the time is right throughout the season.

They all did really well with their pre-season action, benefitted from it and I think they are better players off the back of that involvement.”

      Munster A v Connacht Eagles....

“That’s the beauty of the A games – especially the extra games we play against Connacht, Leinster and Ulster. You can cast your net a bit wider, and guys get the opportunity to show whether they are good enough to step up to the next level. There are club players there – Paddy Ryan at prop, Niall Kenneally did well, Steve Hansel came on – there were a lot of good guys that got a chance and they took it.”

      Interpro Round-Up....

“The results are disappointing. Not to hide behind anything but you would say the performances were pretty close. For the U20s – 3 points against Ulster in a last minute penalty, 1 point against Leinster – a missed conversion, late penalty kick missed – good performances, and then probably a lack of energy against Connacht.

They are disappointing results but I’d like to feel we are going in the right direction. There’s no one here saying it is acceptable to lose those games but we are still developing players to go on and play professional rugby.”

      Academy Players Coming Through....

“Duncan Casey, Cian Bohane, James Cronin, Ronan O’Mahony and Niall Scannell are the most recent graduates into the senior cylce. They have each taken their chances and done pretty well. We are constantly pushing for quality – that’s the big thing – we’re putting top class players through to the senior squad and the players that are going up are pushing the senior players.

James Cronin, Ronan O’Mahony – they are not just going up to fill spaces, they have really pushed on and done well so we need to just keep continuing with that positive development.”

      Academy Staff Changes....

“Feargal O’Callaghan, who was the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Academy is now covering Coach Education across the whole of Munster, and also the underage rugby set-up so he is looking after the physical conditioning of all the underage players that we see that have potential, the Munster U20s, U19s, U18s, and some players that we identify as potentially talented players.

Cedric Unholz comes in as the Academy Strength and Conditioning Lead, working across Limerick and Cork, and Joe McGinley will work with Cedric in covering the Academy.”

      Busy Period....

“Coming up is the B&I Cup, and there is an Irish U20s camp this week also so there is a good few guys involved in both. The B&I Cup is great, it mirrors the Heineken Cup so it is high intensity for two weeks.

It gives younger guys opportunities, it gives senior guys game time, and it gives academy guys the chance to step up and is also a chance to wear the Munster jersey which is a huge honour for any player.

Colm (McMahon), Greig (Oliver) and I are delighted to be involved. It's a step up for us coaching wise and we are looking forward to it.”

Guesses at the team for this one?

            I'm going to go with

            Cotter
            Casey
            Paddy Ryan
            Holland (c)
            Foley
            DOCII
            BOM
            Butler
            Sheridan
            Holland
            Conway
            Dineen
            Bohane
            ROM
            Hurley

I reckon John Ryan will travel to Edinburgh as cover and Niall Ronan will go just in case POM isn't 100% over the coming days.

Could be a chance for a few academy lads on the bench. I reckon Shane Buckley, Darren Sweetnam, Brian Haugh and Rory Scannell might get the nod along with a few others.

Only an outside chance I'll make this game but assuming I don't I'd love to see updates or a match report from anyone who makes it.

Could see Dougall if he's not selected for HEC mix
"There are a lot of points that we’ve left behind and this is with a young group. That probably tells you what they’re capable of and that they’re a very good side.

Probably next year or the year after next they will take some stopping"

The backrow is hugely competitive but personally I'd expect Dougal to start along with POM and Coughlan in Edinburgh. Stander is likely to cover the bench with Ronan brought over as extra cover given the lingering doubts over POM.

You could argue also that there is limited benefit in Ronan playing against the likes of Stirling County (no disrespect to them and all) at this stage in his career too. It comes down to the longstanding argument of "gametime for first team squad members vs development of young prospects".

The 15 above is what I think they will go for. Personally I'd like to see a few guys like Sweetnam, Ryan Murphy and Brian Haugh thrown in from the start.

Judging from the pictures of training from yesterday, i would hazard a guess that both butler and ronan will be travelling to edinburgh on friday night!

Why would you drop Ronan? Thought he had a good game on Saturday night.

It's a tight call but I think Dougal has done well this season too. There isn't much between their work on the deck but I think Dougal offers a bit more defensively and with ball in hand.

Wouldn't kick up any fuss if Ronan started though.

Have you heard something along those lines? I'd be surprised just because Ronan got the nod for Leinster and played well (even if he lost the ball in contact a few times, in fairness he made a right nuisance of himself and helped slow their ball). I'd be happy enough with either Ronan or Dougal starting but you'd think the chopping and changing would be over now we're getting into the real business end.

For the A team I'd love to see Jack O'Donoghue involved, although I believe he picked up an injury in the U20 game against Connacht so maybe someone might know if he's still out or not? I'd also like to see Haugh involved, he was getting big praise a year or so ago but hasn't seen much action in the A games.

I've no inside info on who'll start in Edinburgh sadly (although I think about 80% of the team names itself at this stage). Wouldn't be massivle surprised if what senior said above proved to be true either and we talk 6 backrows to Scotland. Especially with the quality and cover we have in those positions.

Haugh seems to be going very well in the AIL this season. Hurley's injury will open up a spot on the bench at least I'd imagine so hopefully he'll get some game time.

True Dougall has been good, just don't see many changes on the team that started v Leinster last week.

Ronan had to earn his place, and with his performance against Leinster I think he's earned it to play this weekend coming
