MUNSTER tend to get an easy ride in the media.

Theirs has been a story of unquenchable spirit, fanatical support and unlikely victories, rendering them somewhat immune to criticism and imbuing the jersey with a mythical (not to mention 'must-have') quality that led to sports clothing giants Adidas to pursue and procure the lucrative sponsorship rights last week.

In truth, the Munster-media 'love in' can get a bit overbearing but, while it has led to resentment and jealousy among rival provinces, the team's accomplishments have brooked no argument.

A few years ago, ex-Leinster coach Matt Williams famously ranted that his side's achievements never received the recognition enjoyed by their southern neighbours. Yet, the Australian, whose tanned complexion had less to do with the Irish weather than a moth-like devotion to spotlights, failed to recognise that, while Leinster threw away Heineken Cup glory in 2003 with a pitiful Lansdowne Road defeat to Perpignan, Munster secured remarkable long-odds victories away to Stade Francais and Leicester and at home Gloucester.

Their sense of community is something Munster's successful imports have bought into, with South African centre Trevor Halstead revealing last weekend how joining the province had rejuvenated his faltering career made him "a better person".

A vomit-inducing comment, perhaps, if you are from Connacht, Leinster or Ulster but a significant one nonetheless. However, for every Halstead, John Langford or Jim Williams there is a Jason Jones-Hughes or Tom Bowman for whom the experience has been less productive - for all concerned.

This, essentially, is a parish team. Munster's top performers over the past decade (Galwey, Clohessy, O'Gara, Stringer, Hayes, Foley, O'Connell - where do you stop?) learnt the game within the province and possessed a devotion to the cause which significantly aided their careers and made it doubly difficult for foreigners to make an impact.

Ahead of tonight's Heineken Cup quarter-final clash with Llanelli, the focus has fallen on former Scarlets stalwart Chris Wyatt, once considered among the best second rows i

<DIV>BTW. Kyriacou was not a flop. He was on loan FFS and was an excellent player. </DIV>
<DIV>McGann hasn't been a flop either, he's made an excellent contribution this year and it'll be a shame to see him leave.</DIV>

Ah yes, the Indo seems to be popping up a lot these days on this site. Looks like they are steadily chewing off the hands that feed them. Eat away is all I can say, eat away!
