James Downey signs for Munster post 163

Unconfirmed rumors that James Downey will in fact be leaving Northampton and will be seen in a certain red jersey adorned with TOYOTA across the front of it. Expect the announcement after the Saints game this weekend.

And yes, I am aware that he expressly denied the rumors back in April 2011. http://www.examiner.ie/sport/oconnel...ge-151565.html

    But that was then.

    This is now.

Total fcuking disaster!!! Just what we don't need. A 32 yr old one trick pony. Doesn't have quick hands, can't offload at pace, not intuitive. Just another bosh merchant a la Mafi.

You'd have thought we'd have learned from the last two pups we took off the English Premiership.

If only our management had a clue. Imagine what we could do with players of the class of Afoa, Kaino and Payne.

Well done Ulster! A province that knows how to source talent. We only ever seem to get scraps (2e2pu/Williams/Chambers) or hand-me-downs (Murphy/Botha).

Sure youre not getting him mixed up with Wilson who is rejoining Ulster? AFAIK Downey has never played with Ulster to rejoin them

Okay fair enough he's not the most creative of centres but while a) Rog is playing and passes early enough for the defence to double team the 12 and b) you've no decent backs coach or form of broken play he's a guy that can either burst through a tackle and run it, get his arms free in the tackle and offload to a support runner or lastly draw two defenders to create space and offload to another man. When you think of the old fashioned method of bludgeon and rapier play with 12's and 13's he'd fit in quite nicely while munster get their back play together. At the minute he offers power that you don't have in any other back in your squad, and any of the above options would do very nicely for Dougie, Earls or Jones running inside or outside lines off him. Mafi isn't physically big enough to get his arms free and offload (or if he can, doesn't do it often enough) so Downey'd offer a pretty big boost right now.
The system is dead! Long live the process!

Very hard to judge a player based on Premiership performances at this stage. Worth noting though that Saints are probably ok with him going.
"We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven into an age of unreason if we dig deep into our history and remember we are not descended from fearful men" Edward R Murrow

"Little by little, we have been brought into the present condition in which we are able neither to tolerate the evils from which we suffer, nor the remedies we need to cure them." - Livy

"I think that progress has been made by two flames that have always been burning in the human heart. The flame of anger against injustice and the flame of hope that you can build a better world" - Tony Benn

                              He's 32 man...thirty-fcuking-two.

He's not nearly as effective as he was a couple of years ago, and will het worse!!!

For the umpteenth time the pig-ignorant turnips @ the MB have been sold a pup. Just like we were sold a pup with Henderson, Carney and now Murphy.
