The EPCR have today stated that a 24-club Champions Cup with eight representatives from each of Europe’s leading league competitions is one of the options under discussion for the tournament next season.

A scheduled start to the 2020/21 Champions Cup has been set for the weekend of 11/12/13 December.
An official announcement will be made by EPCR regarding formats once all discussions are concluded.

I wonder will it be 8 groups of 3?

Could be..... home and away format will still give you the numbe of games needed to make cash, but less weekend to do it...
          only the winner goes through
He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck either, but a real duck that was actually lame. Maybe from stepping on a land mine or something.

As was mentioned in the Champions Cup thread, 8 group of 3 gives you 4 games, but still spread over 6 weekends as every team has to have 2 bye weekends. However this does allow for the various leagues to be played in conjunction with the Champions Cup if teams from the same league each get the same bye weekends.

As per RTÉ post, regarding HCUP

They are considering 8 reps from each league, but this doesn’t seem to be decided.

                Unsurprisingly a later start....
“Any changes would apply to next season’s tournaments, which are scheduled to start on the weekend of 11/12/13 December, only on an exceptional basis.

which I think means losing two weekends, and with 4 qualifying weekends, meaning the quarters and beyond as well as 6N don’t need replanting. Home and away with 3 in each group, one each from the other league, is the neatest way of making it run and ensuring coffers are fairly equal within a group.

8 teams form each league is too much. The point is that it is supposed to be made up of the stronger teams in each league which is why they only come form the top half of each league's table. Stretching it to 8 will just end in having some very weak teams in the "Champion's Cup".

Yes, very sympathetic to that point of view, consider pro14 for example, discount SA teams and we’re down to 9th! However, 8 from 3 leagues, top teams qualifying makes it very easy to run, and the top teams each get handy groups- a bit like the farce the champions league has become, where there aren’t any properly compete each games until quarter finals.

It's not like this is a normal situation. The French want 8 because their league was finished with a third of the games still to play. The only way to work that is a once off tournament with 8 from each league. The long term aim is to reduce to 18 teams.

Yes, I can see that, and it makes sense to do it this way, since player are back in two of the leagues with something to play for, in August/ September, Pro14 starting soon afterwards, this will be a very long season for players. 4 groups games, against weaker opponents (assuming they ceded sensibly) means international players can be managed more easily, working towards a September semi/final, AI??, HCUP quarters, 6N, HCUP semi/final and Pro14 semi/final, before a Lions tour. That’s a massive amount of very high level rugby, and hopefully also a lot of opportunity for our younger players.
