not that strange. Has happened a fair bit before.
Player leaves club early because of not getting game time. Weve seen it with quite few players in short term deals like stringer but it's the exact same as that

I would be guessing but splitting salary makes sense if he is not in their plans In current environment every little helps.

I’d say you’re right. That would make the fact that it is a loan deal make a lot more sense

Very interesting that he had ‘the tour’ last November..I’m still not entirely sure we need him- given the back three options we already have- but very welcome nonetheless.

I think 8 back 3 players is about right given that we have Earls and Conway in the Ireland squad. Wootton was out of favour and while others can “cover” fullback, it’s good to have another specialist in the squad.

I take your point- and Haley was part of the Ireland set up too. My concern is whether those who aren’t with Ireland get enough consistent game time, and that younger guys also get a meaningful look in. Unfortunately, because money is so tight, I suppose any chance of a competitive u23/ A competition has receded still further.

I’m very much in the minority, but I’d happily have expanded and strengthened the B&I cup. That’s absolutely off the table now in a post covid world.
I’d love to see ya play 6 home/away games instead against Leinster A, Ulster ravens and a combined connacht/exiles team. Enough game time for lads to get used to playing with each other while playing at a standard above AIL.
The academy position is really interesting this year. We have 8 guys (one for nearly every position “group”) in the final year who are going to have to unseat someone ahead of them to get a senior deal. We’d probably have had 10 final years if we didn’t have to fend off Leinster and Connacht to keep Casey and Barron.
I’m really surprised nobody got dropped from the academy, but it’ll make this year interesting. Is Wren better than Coombes? Can Daly replace Tommy? Can Wycherley unseat Cronin or O’Connor?

I think the way to gauge it is probably against Leinster, Sarries(for now), Toulouse and Racings setups.

One of the computer whizzes will give us a breakdown of their back 3 stocks hopefully

Ironically the back 3 is about the only position Leinster are arguably a little short. If Rob Kearney packs it in then they only have 6 back 3 players in their 46 man senior squad.

I agree with you about B&I - but that’s partly self interest in terms of seeing red shirts closer to what now is home. In the current climate unless there’s TV money or sponsorship it’s doomed- and if there was extra going about it would probably go to the senior set ups. Coombes, for example, is a case in point- got a senior contract quite early on- hasn’t really had a run out because of our back 3 strengths, and desire to give centres a bit of a run in the wing. So now we hit the point where the guy is, basically unproven, holding a space against a guy who probably justifies a pro contact as much as Coombes did. Then we bring in a back 3 player who while obviously more experienced, and presumably much better at the moment- means a player coming through loses his opportunity to shine. If Gallagher is better than, say Daly, and will always be better than Daly, then that’s professional sport. But that’s a very tough assessment to make, and is made even harder through not seeing how the player does beyond AIL.

That’s remarkably short, especially given the glamour there will be for Lowe to join the Irish set up.

B&I definitely going ahead this year

And while their academy options are decent, IMO they aren’t potential superstars like Clarkson or Hawkshaw. We could see sone of the centres pushed out and Barry Daly could be a bigger loss than anticipated.

It hasn’t been a real A tournament in a while though. It badly needs a sponsor and everyone to take it seriously
