Thomond Park may have new name

Thomond Park may no longer be called Thomond Park by the time it`s reopened after development.

There is a push on from the IRFU in Dublin to offer big companies the naming rights to the new stadium. The Sunday Times reports that Irish Rugby Football Union bosses in Dublin believe the name Thomond may have to be dropped and replaced by a sponsers name.

IRFU Chief Executive Philip Brown sights Arsenals new home in London, the Emerate stadium as an example of naming rights bringing in up to 20 million pounds sterling a year.

The Munster Branch of the Union are understood to be opposed to any other name for Thomond Park.

It could be a case of Big Brother giving his little brother a nickname, money over history, what do you think???

Is there a push on, or is someone just speculating aimlessly?

No fuppin way can they drop Thomond from the name. This could be a way of trying to get acceptance for something like 'Toyata Thomond Park' by suggesting something worse first

It would be a disaster if they didn't get a couple of million for a ten year deal. I would have thought that Saturday taught a lesson that mythology will only get you so far.

Hogan's Thomond Park has a nice ring to it ....

Hassett's Cross was good enough for over 30 years - this TP stuff is a relatively recent concoction.

Well with all the MRSC fans clamouring for more quality players to be brought in how else would they propose to finance that? Logic dictates it will have a different name.
