    Castres Away October 15th

    Anybody booked?
Any idea of how best to travel?
    Places to stay?
    Anybody been there before?
Advice on where to have one or two drinks?

    #2
The consensus seems to be Shannon or Cork to Stanstead and from there to Carcassonne, Toulouse or even Girona.

Rural French towns tend to be dead on Sunday evening, but as I've not been to Castres before, I don't know. Others may be able to advise.

Anyone arriving late into Toulouse on Friday could do worse than Trevor Brennan's place, De Danu. A few decent hotels within a 15 minute stroll. Then on to Castres on Saturday.

FYI Trevor Brennan sold De Danu few years ago. Whatever still a very decent place.
Trevor's new pub is in suburbs at Castelginest.

Was there a few years ago. Flew to Carcassonne. Hired a car. Don't hire your car through Ryanair's site. It'll take an age to collect it as most others will be doing the same.
Stayed at the Hotel Campanile in Saix,5 minutes in a taxi from Castres. Small hotel and quite reasonable.

We are looking at flying into Toulouse, what's a good place to stay? Near this bar or is there a better area?

Do you need to pre book trains in France?

Depends on the route and distance. Can be much cheaper but you are then fixed to a particular train.

Go to sncf.fr - look at a train for a few days time and another for two months time and you will see the difference.

The again it was Ryanair who really brought dynamic pricing to the masses in Europe.

to be honest, still never did this journey but it's a regional and surely small train.

for the sake of it, and after traveling so far, it's probably better to book just in case there is big demand or smaller capacity.

downtown De Danu is surely one of the more decent. near this one there is Kyriad just over the Canal. but I never stayed there. usually I stay near Place Wilson (Novotel or Mercure) close to Aupa's hotel, Place du Capitole and Place St Georges. good restaurants next door. 15 minutes walk to De Danu and railway station.

On Friday Oct 13 - Shannon to Stansted then Stansted on to Carcassonne, Monday 16 - Carcassonne to Stansted and Stansted to Shannon. €70 in total, 4/5 hour layovers in Stansted over and back though.
