Lux Sees Little Light for Heineken Cup

Heineken Cup organisers yesterday said they could not guarantee the tournament would go ahead next season if the French clubs boycotted it.

"I cannot be confident," said the ERC chairman, Jean Pierre Lux, hinting that a peace deal between the Rugby Football Union and the Premiership clubs involving voting rights at European board level was required to break the impasse.

"What can change is the situation in England between the clubs and the union. It will be very difficult for ERC and our commercial partners if the French clubs stop for one year. Regaining sponsors' confidence would be difficult."

The possibility of French teams contesting this year's final at Twickenham increased with the semi-final draw. If Stade Fran├žais beat Leicester they will be at home to Llanelli Scarlets or Munster; Biarritz will host Wasps or Leinster if they beat Northampton.
