<S&#079;NG>Liverpool left to look at what they lost </S&#079;NG>

A glance at the directors' box at Anfield hints at the burden history provides for the current crop of players who are expected to emulate the eminent. A sprinkling of alumni can include some of the most decorated and celebrated footballers to represent Liverpool. If those spotted are often of a certain vintage, such as Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen, Arsenal's visit attracted an Anfield great of the more recent past. Xabi Alonso was back.

Attending a game that ended amid a funereal atmosphere, the excitable Arsenal fans apart, the midfielder made his return at a footballing cathedral that has been mourning his passing for half a season. His carefully calibrated distribution, whether over five yards or 50, has been lacking from Liverpool's game. With Alonso sat among the distinguished guests, they could have benefited from his presence on the pitch in a final half-hour when they failed to penetrate an obdurate Arsenal defence.

While his understated elegance may have obscured his importance before his departure, it didn't hide his significance to his team-mates. Now, however, it is widely acknowledged. Alonso's deputy, Lucas Leiva, is often maligned, his replacement, Alberto Aquilani, is rarely seen and was spotted hobbling for part of his inconsequential cameo. Glen Johnson, signed with some of the proceeds of his sale, played an unfortunate part in both of Arsenal's goals.

Alonso's absence ranks as a major cause of a deepening plight. While Liverpool were confined to seventh place by a 10th defeat of the season, an advertising banner suggested "Visit Spain". If only Alonso had not heeded that advice in the summer.

<S&#079;NG>Misfiring Liverpool set to win the race for Real Madrid forgotten man Ruud van Nistelrooy </S&#079;NG>

Liverpool are ready to take Ruud van Nistelrooy on loan for six months when the January transfer window opens.

The former Manchester United striker, who underwent a successful operation to have his tonsils removed yesterday, is desperate to leave Real Madrid to play regular football and be part of Holland's World Cup squad.

Liverpool are reluctant to sign Van Nistelrooy permanently but manager Rafa Benitez knows he needs someone to play alongside Fernando Torres to rekindle the Reds' season.

However, the Bernabeu hierarchy are determined to off load the 33-year-old on a permanent basis and any switch will rely on Benitez persuading the Spanish giants to let him have the striker on loan.

Van Nistelrooy is fit after a long-term knee injury but with Raul, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Higuain and Karim Benzema ahead of him his chances at the Bernabeu are limited.

Arsenal and Blackburn Rovers have also shown an interest in Van Nistelrooy but the striker is believed to favour a move to Anfield.

<S&#079;NG>IS SCOTT PARKER REALLY WHAT LIVERPOOL NEED ???</S&#079;NG>

Liverpool are looking to add midfielders to their squad following the injury problems of Alberto Aquilani and their failure to replace Xabi Alonso and The Sun are claiming that West Ham’s Scott Parker is the man for the job. The West Ham man has seen his career ruined somewhat by injuries but has regained full fitness and could be the subject of a £6 million bid which cash strapped West Ham may be unable to turn down.

Parker, 29, may have seen his chances hurt by injury during spells with Newcastle and West Ham but Liverpool fans will remember that he was a very good player back in the day, excelling for Charlton and earning a big move to Chelsea where he stalled briefly. Despite his injuries Parker has still looked a good player when fit and was named West Ham’s Player of the Year last season.

Liverpool are keen on Parker for his combative style and passing ability and he would prove good competition for Steven Gerrard, Yossi Benayoun, Alberto Aquilani – if he can stay fit – , Lucas and Javier Mascherano if the latter does stay amidst reports of a move to Spanish giants Barcelona. It is believed that Parker could be a big help to Liverpool’s ambitions to get back to the Top 4 following their poor season so far, which has seen them knocked out of the Champions League early and also look capable of missing out on a Top 4 spot for next season.

According to the Daily Mirror <ABBR title="">Liverpool</ABBR> are set to receive a major cash investment from the Royal Family of the United Arab Emirates.

Members of the Ras al-Khaimah family are apparently seeking talks with American co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett about possible investment.

They are believed to want the two Americans to fly to the Middle East as soon as possible in order to sort out a deal that could bring a massive cash boost into Anfield.

"At the moment, we are not commenting on this speculation," Ian Cotton, <ABBR title="">Liverpool</ABBR>'s director of communications said.
