England had more than their share of luck in the final session, albeit Pope played well if not quite infallible. Pak bowlers got a bit over excited with the help from the wicket. The 1st hour this morning will be very important. If England lose 3/4 wickets, or if the Pope is excommunicated cheaply they are done for.

167 behind at lunch with 5 wickets (Butler and below) left, absolute mountain to climb for England. Restricting the lead to 100 would be an achievement, but on this pitch, batting last and with, say, 350+ to get will be well nigh impossible, unless Manchester weather exerts it’s influence 1-0 to Pakistan (and deservedly so).

England all out for 219, 107 behind.

Pak strong favs but at 51/3 need to be careful. 200 will probably be enough but they'll want at least 250.

101/5. They've let England back in but I'd still have Pakistan as slight favourites. Batsmen feel the pressure more in chasing a target.

300 will be hard to get.

120 for 6. This is trouble.

8 down, England have bowled well- will be a nail biting day tomorrow, and maybe Sunday.

Could be an absolute nail biter, another 20 runs would be crucial. Yasir is a wicket taker but gives away runs. Shah is strong and quick but doesn't get close enough to the stumps at the bowling end and gives a few free hits. Pakistan will have to pair their bowlers so one end is tied down to keep the pressure on the batters. One way or another will be a great day. You'd have to back Pakistan, even though they did their best to lose their advantage.

Am not so sure- a lot of England’s batsmen didn’t fire yesterday, and I doubt they will fail twice- a 250-270 chase is feasible even against what is a very exciting, young attack. Whether they can cope with the pressure of having to keep it tight I’m not sure. Will be real test match cricket whichever way it goes, but I fancy England to get out of jail- perhaps undeservedly.

Feel it's always more difficult for the batting side. Anything over 250 is tough when the wicket helps the bowlers.

Say England wrap up the tail early for, say, 150. That would leave them five and a half sessions to get 258 to win.

That's 47 runs per session. 1.5 runs per over.

Some Boycottish batting would do nicely.

If they just keep calm and punish the odd bad delivery they should be more than capable of doing it.

                          If...

Getting over the new ball is crucial, lose a couple of quick wickets, and the pressure breaks a lot of batting sides, a dogged 40 over a couple of hours, target a little closer and the attack gets more desperate. But the last wickets need to go quickly. Really looking forward to a great days test cricket.

You have to play your natural game. Anything else will bog you down and you'll be picked off.

Good spurt by Pak. Yasir actually has a 1st class 100, so not a mug. That has likely tipped it crucially in Pak's favour.

Yes- those 30 runs a nice start- but there is so much time in the game...
