gender bender

AN INDIAN runner who won a silver medal in the women's 800 metre run at the Asian Games earlier this month has failed a gender test and has been stripped of the medal, the Indian Olympic Association said yesterday.

Shanti Sounderajan (25) took the gender test in Doha, Qatar, after the race.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has been told by the Olympic Council of Asia that Sounderajan was disqualified, the IOA said in a statement in New Delhi.

"IOA has asked the Athletic Federation of India to return the medal as desired by the Olympic Council of Asia," it said.

The IOA also asked its medical commission to inquire into Sounderajan's case and submit its report within 10 days.

There are no compulsory gender tests during events sanctioned by the International Association of Athletics Federation, but athletes can be asked to take a gender test.

The medical evaluation panel usually includes a gynecologist, endocrinologist, psychologist, and an internal medicine specialist.

An Indian athletics official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media said Sounderajan almost certainly never had sex-change surgery.

Instead, the official said Sounderajan appeared to have abnormal chromosomes. The official had no further details.

They could do with checking the Leinster team!!!!
"This was the performance Ireland had been threatening all championship but had only managed to produce in fits and starts. Defeats at the hands of France and Wales had put paid to their title aspirations, never mind a Grand Slam, but yesterday’s emphatic 24-8 win shows that this is a team moving in the right direction."

Since when did gender tests become the norm??

That happened ages ago in a big international event didn't it? The girl who finished second in a race accused the winner of being a man, and thus she was forced to go through an embarrassing (particularly, back then) test to disprove it.

The ironic thing was, it later was 'revealed' it was the 'girl' who finished second who actually was a man.

Gender testing was introduced after the last rerun of Crocodile Dundee.

Easy to spot. Follow them to the jax. If they stand to peethen they're almost certainly male. I say almost certainly because some of the Chinese female gymnasts can adopt most unusual positions.(I've heard). A good screening test however..the stand up and be discounted test.

It was some time later, when 'she' was caught. Watch out for those Polish girls, you may get more than you bargained for:

Competing for Poland, Stella Walsh won the 100 meters in 1932, equalling the world record three times in the process. Four years later, at the Berlin Olympics, Walsh was beaten into second place by American Helen Stephens. A Polish journalist accused Stephens of being a man in disguise. German officials examined her and issued a statement that Stephens was definitely a woman. Forty-four years later, in 1980, Walsh, by then an American citizen living in Cleveland, was shot to death when she stumbled into the middle of a robbery attempt at a discount store. An autopsy concluded that although Helen Stephens may not have had male sexual organs, Stella Walsh did. All the while that Walsh was winning medals and setting records in women's events, she was, by today's rules, a man.

Before the Wall came down East German female teenage atheletes were given large quantitiies of testosterone in their diet, many of their voices became very deep, and became very heavily muscled. Records after the wall came down proved the scale of the testosterone taking by female athletes, and tens of E. German coaches were convicted.

Records proved that most german athletes since the 60's were doping, and testosterone was been taken for decades by female athletes, which explained most of the golds they got.
