Nintendo recalls 3.2 million straps for WII controllers

Japanese gamemaker Nintendo today recalled 3.2 million straps for its popular Wii computer game controllers to address the problem of the device flying out of the hands of overzealous players.

Nintendo announced earlier this month that it was investigating reports of problems with a strap that secures the machines’ wandlike remote-controller to the player’s wrist.

Players hold the remote to mimic the motions of a tennis racket, golf club or sword, depending on the game.

Nintendo will allow customers to exchange the old straps for a beefed-up strap, company spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa said.

The worldwide recall is expected to cost the company several million euro.

The controls is one of the unique features of the Wii, which Nintendo introduced as its counterchallenge in a fierce three-way battle with Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

Could cause real problems, especially given that you're going to be standing straight in front of your brand new 65 foot nuclear powered telly while you're waving it about.

Gamers told to be wary of potentially faulty Wii wrist straps

New advice is being given out to anyone who's bought a Nintendo Wii.
It's after reports wrist straps on some consoles snapped while being used, causing the remote control to fly out of peoples' hands.

Gamers are being told to avoid excessively rapid, violent or wide swinging movements, and to not have sweaty palms.

I haven't seen many pics, but have heard there's quite a few photoshopped OTT efforts out there.

I can just imagine, someone with a picture of a reticent Osama Bin Laden with a wiimote sheepishly in hand, with the twin towers crumbling in the background..

Further problems hit Nintento's new console

                      14:06 Thursday December 21st 2006

Another problem's hit the new Nintendo Wii.
Owners of the console have been urged to avoid fairy lights near TV sets while they play.

Some users have found they interfere with the remote control sensor.

Already some wrist straps on the new machines have snapped.
