Have to say I sympathise a bit with the early start - a lot of people need to spread their spending, and start stocking up early.

Agree that the festivities themselves should be left as long as possible, but it seems lots of people start sweating about being able to afford Christmas in August, and the rampant commercialism doesn't leave much option for a cheap alternative.

My grandmother used to cause me untold distressa week before christmas by gathering up all the toys I hadn't played with in a year, bagging them and taking them around to the mothers of families who couldn't afford to buy new stuff for their kids.

Doubt anyone would take them now - too easy to put it on the never never.
"We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven into an age of unreason if we dig deep into our history and remember we are not descended from fearful men" Edward R Murrow

"Little by little, we have been brought into the present condition in which we are able neither to tolerate the evils from which we suffer, nor the remedies we need to cure them." - Livy

"I think that progress has been made by two flames that have always been burning in the human heart. The flame of anger against injustice and the flame of hope that you can build a better world" - Tony Benn

I saw it on TV - kid looked far from impressed. Still, twas a nice gesture and the mayor was doing his best to cheer the wee lad up...

I'd love to do just that.......will check it out.

Rather early start and a late late arrival, but it's astonishing value.

Lads, I am in the same boat, absolutely hate Christmas. The thoughts of putting up a Christmas Tree gives me ire. If I could get away with not putting one up then I would leave it in the attic, never to see the light of day again.
