French Filmmaker Sues Google

Google Video's generous length allowance comes with a built-in legal meat grinder: uploading other people's movies is a snap. The French producers of "The World According to Bush," a Michael Moore-esque rake over the U.S. president's attitudes and allegedly shady connections, are suing the search giant in Europe, claiming lost sales as the result of Google's service.

Production house Flach said that Google's hosting of the movie - the uploader wasn't named - resulted in 43,000 hits in "a very short period," and was only cut off after the firm was notified of legal action. Issuing a writ at a Parisian commercial court, they alleged Google's French subsidiary infringed their copyright by allowing the free distribution.

"We made estimates of the prejudice and its goes well beyond 500,000 euros ($648,700)," filmmaker Jean-Francois Lepetit told Reuters. "The film has been downloaded about 50,000 times and it has certainly been copied afterwards."

This isn't Google's only European woe either, today. A Belgian court announced this morning that it would wait until 2007 to decide whether to allow them reproduce extracts from Belgian press reports, after an injunction against them was granted earlier this year. Angence France-Press is also suing Google in the U.S. over the Google News's aggregator.

      <DIV>no.</DIV>
<DIV>But I think this is interesting. I think this is just the beginning of such cases. The FA have ongoing issues with YouTube at the moment as people are uploading entire matches in 10 minute segments. They have actually hired somebody to browse youtube and locate any of the games, I'm not sure if legal action has been taken yet though.</DIV>

Aye, and youTube is now owned by the giant that is Google. I think they can well afford it what with it now valued at over 150 billion. 500 new jobs coming to the Dublin area as well. Some bloody company I have to say
