    Slow Computer

PC is starting to slow down mainly on boot up. I have over a Gb of ram and over 44% harddrive space available. Scandisk won't complete a scan and defrag doesn't need to be done. Running Windows XP PC two years old. Any suggestions!

Sean - I'm no expert....might be worth running CCleaner etc. Hve a look at this link for other progs you may want to investigate

    http://techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm

    it's a Google homepage option.

Other than that, have you cleared your cache? Are you using Google desktop search? The indexing process uses a lot of memory.

    Hope this helps.

You could try adjusting your virtual memory, it's usually set to a low level, upping it could help performance. Can't remember how to do this though.

It could also be the number of programmes automatically initiating on start up, you can turn some of these off...somehow.

      Well that wasn't particularly helpful.

          hit ctrl alt delete

in the processes tab order the processes by cpu and see if theres anything taking up a lot of cpu power. could be a virus or something you downloaded you dont realise is using a lot of power

                      Try these:

                      http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310312

                      @@@@SPAN lang="EN-GB"> https://helpdesk.jetnet.aa.com/knowb...ublic/aa_bb916 7.htm@@@@/SPAN>

and consider running CCleaner and the free version of Adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) regularly.

Finally, it might be worth ditching MS Internet Explorer and using e.g. Firefox instead. apparently, many viruses are written with IE in mind and firefox doesn't have the same problems. (Happy to be corrected on this!)
