One of the main reasons fine gael pushed for the public services card was their claim that it would reduce welfare fraud. Turns out that was a massive load of bs.
60 plus million wasted on this nonsense and the people responsible are still in their jobs.

The Government’s policy of retaining its citizens’ personal information upon registration for a Public Services Card has no impact with regard to preventing welfare fraud, the PSC’s original purpose.

That is the finding of the Data Protection Commissioner’s long-awaited report into the card which was published this evening.

The Commissioner, Helen Dixon, said that “no evidence has been proffered”, save for a single case study, by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection to show that such information, primarily utility bills, is necessary in order to identify identity fraud in the first place.

I think even your most die hard fg member would admit it was/is a govt attempt to bring in a national ID card by the back door

In a completely stupid haze of ineptitude the government has given itself an award for the procurement process for the disastrous public services card...
All this before different government departments start suing other over the whole thing.
FG are corrupt, incompetent and warped but this is really messed up.

"The Government has given the process at the heart of the ill-starred Public Services Card (PSC) - which now appears headed for the courts - its overall award for high-tech excellence.

The Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) has found it was illegal for the Government to insist that citizens use the card to access public services other than welfare.

Now it appears likely that various arms of the State will end up suing each other in expensive and complex court actions."

          Fine Gael looking very right wing after their latest european performance;

          https://www.thejournal.ie/maria-wals...66663-Oct2019/

MEP MARIA WALSH has defended voting down an EU resolution which would have stepped up search and rescue for refugees in the Mediterranean.

The European Parliament rejected the vote asking member states to step up efforts to save asylum seekers making the perilous crossing on Thursday.

All of Fine Gael’s MEPs – Mairead McGuinness, Maria Walsh, Frances Fitzgerald and Sean Kelly – voted against the resolution, which lost by two.

Voting against helping migrants stranded at sea. Would you not describe that as a very right wing action?

Did the Shinners vote in this one?

According to Miriam Lord in the Irish Times of the 26th of Oct, Matt Carthy of Sinn Féin voted in favour of the motion.

Which is not good in my opinion. I was just curious to see how the normally abstaining SF MEPs voted.

                            Thanks PK

Except they didn't? The €40m for the school remedial works was spent over the course of months, not today, and they're sueing WBS. It's also less than planned for.

The €5m is a problem Bertie Aherns FF government created over a decade ago.

I'll all for bashing FG, but at least use stuff that's actual their fault.
