    Palestinian State

    Funny that there isn't a dedicated thread to this already so here goes

    http://rt.com/news/218911-palestine-next-steps-bid/

    "Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has signed the Rome Statute, the founding treaty to join the International Criminal Court, a day after the UNSC failed to adopt the Arab coalition’s bid for the creation of a Palestinian state.

    The Palestinian Authority could also schedule a date for applying to join the International Criminal Court and other international agencies, negotiator Saeb Erekat said, adding that officials would hold a "very serious meeting" on Wednesday.

    "There will be no more waiting, no more hesitation, no more slowdown," Erekat said. "We are going to meet and make decisions."

    A batch of newly signed treaties will be delivered to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's office by the end of the week, a diplomat at the Palestinian UN observer mission told Reuters."

    as a relatively new state ourselves I wish them well!

    Why the UNSC failed to adopt the Palestinian bid is beyond me. The UK hierarchy is not representing its people who had massive protests during the Gaza shelling. Aussies being an inconsequential state have no business voting against and the US are a disgrace. A chance missed to sort it within 2 years for both the people of Israel and Palestine.

      Sad to say but many Arab states have a vested interest in not having a Palestinian state, despite public utterances to the contrary. A major factor would be if it came about that the Palestinians created a democratic, tolerant state (would Islamic Hamas allow this?) with a functioning economy not based on commodities (esp oil) and so on. This is not the example that many Arab states want to have their people see. Also, they can use the Palestine crisis as a distraction domestically.
      Would love to see secular, democratic states in both Israel and Palestine with the internationalisation of Jerusalem. A resolution of this issue is very much in the interests of Israel also, despite their powerful US lobby who are entirely hardline and pro Natanyahu and hose even further right. A lot of this unthinking, unyielding support for the hardest possible line from the Israeli government comes from the evangelical right in the USA who are increasing in influence via the Tea Party and mainstream Republicanism, and who are waiting an Armageddon, literally not figuratively. Maybe Obama, given that he is now powerless with his hostile Congress, would take the bold step of putting himself and his office firmly in the Two State Solution camp.

        The U.S. is already in the two state solution camp and has been for some time.

          i don't believe it's supposed opposition from other Arab states that's the main impediment to the creation of a secure Palestinian state.

            why then did the US decide to not support the Arab coalitions resolution at the UN Security Council?

              I would think that fairly obvious if you go and do your research.

                Good to see the ICC look into this;

                "The International Criminal Court (ICC) has launched a preliminary examination into possible war crimes in the Palestinian territories, opening a path to possible charges against Israelis or Palestinians."It's important to understand that the preliminary examination is not an investigation, it is a process in a course of which the office will gather information on alleged crimes committed in Palestine since June of last year, and then we will asses this information, and at the end of the process we will decide whether to open an investigation or close the matter, or possibly we would need further information," Emeric Rogier, head of the analysis unit at the prosecutor's office at the ICC said on Monday (January 19).
                In a statement on Friday, prosecutors said they would examine "in full independence and impartiality" crimes that may have occurred since June 13 last year. This allows the court to delve into the war between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza in July-August 2014 during which more than 2,100 Palestinians and 73 Israelis were killed."

                  Ya. That's good news. Netanyahu should be in the hague already.

                      Should anyone from Hamas be there as well given they were firing indiscriminately into civilian areas during the same conflict?

                        Just to remind you of the facts PP;

                        This allows the court to delve into the war between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza in July-August 2014 during which more than 2,100 Palestinians and 73 Israelis were killed

                        I think its obvious to anyone with a functioning brain who the main aggressor is here.

                            They should be looking at the Israeli war crimes from late 40s and their invasion of the Palestinian territories.

                              What about the rest of Palestine, for example that which is part of Jordan, will that be investigated as well or are we just on the usual Israeli witch hunt.
