    Local Erections 2014

Local election candidates get to put up their posters from midnight tonight. So some early morning ladder dashing and tussles around lampposts at junctions all around the country to be expected.
Underhanded cable tie snipping, poster turning and black marker moustaches aplenty.

Loads of point scoring, Twitter gaffs, silly rants, dodgy haircuts, and politicians pointing at things in the papers from now until the elections.

Before anyone asks, I have no political affiliations. I just find the whole process laughable and in some ways entertaining.

First of all, I wish you that the erections are always local, even if I do think politics is the domain of eunuchs who lost their balls in an unknown corner and who don't do what they promised before they get the power, and who are more interested in putting their trousers down in front of the economical lobbies. Or does it mean a new concept of remote love? Postage stamp like viagra pill?..
Anyway, I am convinced by one thing today: Voting needs a few seconds for the partisan choice, 2 minutes to put the ballot paper in the envelope, and then the envelope in the box, and then prepares you to years of regrets and pain.
"To be energetic and self-sufficing is to be happy; but while one desire remains in the heart happiness may not come there. For to desire is to be incomplete: it is the badge of dependence, the signal of unhappiness, and to be freed from that is to be freed from every fetter that can possibly be forged." See FG have said they will not be addressing upward only rents at all. Yet another promise to the electorate dumped. To borrow a quote from else where that 5 point plan is beginning to look like a no point plan.

As the old bathroom poster used to say: Don't vote-the government will get in.

If you're local and any use you'll get the vote so quit sticking posters up all over the place. Ban It I say, Ban it!

Its a woeful waste of plastic and makes the place look filthy. There should be a candidate booklet posted through every door in Ireland, each politician gets a single page to do with what they want, get rid of wrecking the place with crappy campaign posters.

Then implement the Massachusetts approach, plant said candidate on a roundabout (or rotary) and have them wave Irish flags.
          I am the million man.

I've seen Timmy Dooley standing on a roundabout in Shannon in times past waving to those driving into the industrial estate. The man must be ahead of the pack!!

I heard (Post or Leader) that a small number of existing Councillors had proposed that these posters be phased out in Limerick over the next few years, and have a rule for this election that you'd be allowed 1 poster each at 1 nominated location in each area/village.

But as will become evident in the early hours of tomorrow morning this wont be the case. Either they didn't carry it through or the proposal came up against opposition from other politicians. I think a bit of both.

On the upside. If you need some corry board for something, there'll pe plenty littering the lamposts for the next month.

I find election voting really difficult these days. It is becoming increasingly harder to choose which party I put last on the ballot paper - Fine Gael or Fianna Fail!

McCloud, if you can, replay Oliver Callans Friday evening radio show from about one month ago (towards end I recall) where Kenny banters with Varadkar and co about the 'success' of the 5 point plan. Savagely brilliant satire which hit its target dead on. And the joke is on us. Know some FG canvassers and they are getting run from the doorsteps in every part of Limerick. The locals and Europeans will be a bloodbath for Labour and to a lesser degree FG. When you promise change and deliver the same old, then you will be cleaned out.

See from political press that FG are hanging out the Labour 'token working class origin woman', AG Marie Whelan, out to dry on this one. Apparently she opined before general elections that it would be possible and then when independent legal advice was obtained, it was not clear cut after all. She was Labour party treasurer/financial officer and part of the Gilmore kitchen cabinet and apparently did not seek specialised legal advice from specialist in the area before saying that upward only rent reviews could be abolished. She is also being fingered by FG for the delay in sending Callanan letter to Shatter. Companies seem to be getting around this one by having a separate limited company for each store and then saying they will liquidate that separate company, thereby voiding the leases, if not treated correctly. Is this correct T78?

A local Councillor could have been doing excellent work locally (their job), so shutting the door on him because he's from FF FG Lab Green etc is just being ignorant. Unless of course you know they are useless. If they've done nothing for the last term then you should probably forget them.

As I see it, It's picking someone who is being industrious within the local area (and actually getting things done), having local policies which you mostly agree with and having a good level of intellect.

A lot of local candidates are deluded about their role. So someone talking all bombastic about national issues could be useless when it comes to making decisions in the council chamber.

Posters have been banned in Ennis for years, so they plaster every lampost in the surrounding areas instead.

This from a few years ago, not sure if anything came from it.

                              http://www.limerickleader.ie/news/bu...area-1-4051711

COUNCILLORS in the Castleconnell electoral area have backed a voluntary ban on election posters within the speed limits of six villages.
