Recommendations for Hotel in New York?

been browsing the usual Hotel sites and there seems to be some good offers on Hotels. Need a place for 3 nights in January and am looking for one that is within easy walking distance of Times square, etc. (and near a subway).
The following hotels look interesting, anyone got any feedback on them. I was going by the ratings they were given on some of the hotels sites. (its a birthday treat for herself)

Salisbury Hotel, Wellington, Milford, The Manhattan, .

    Any other suggestions?

Fitzpatrick's is handy for travel on subway etc. and is walking distance to Times Square. Not too expensive (by NY standards) either.

Recently stayed a week in the Lexington too and it was ok. Rooms were small but clean and it's a very central location too.

Have a look at the Affinia Manhattan.

It's across the road from Madison Square Gardens, around the corner from Macy's, the Subway and Penn Stn. Maybe a 15 to 20 min stroll from Times Sq. though.

Excellent suite type rooms the couple of times we stayed there, very spacious and comfortable.

If there is a specific reason that you have to be within walking distance of TS, ignore the rest of this.

I always stay in Queens as it's WAAAAY cheaper and only 20 mins on the subway into Times Square. Have stayed at each of these:

Just a tip for booking flights to the US and hotels over there. If the exchange rates are favourable you can book in $USD through the site orbitz.com. There's always some great deals on there.

Hotel Metro West 35th and 5th. About a 10 min walk from Times Square and 1 min from Subway, 5 mins walk to Penn.

Stayed at the Westin about four years ago and it was good. Times itself Square is a bit "see it once and done", but it's a handily central part of Manhattan, so easy to access the other neighbourhoods.

Outdoor bar in Bryant Park is nice in the warm weather too.

hi shep ,stayed in the New Yorker hotel this september, corner of 8th avenue and 34 th street, few mins walk from penn bus station and subway is 1 minute walk, mins. Hotel was great , we only had board there but rooms were great and showers ,facilities etc were fine. Staff friendly. nice diner next door called tick tock , grand for breakfast and on your way for the day. Times sq is about 15 mins walk, nearest landmark to hotel is madison sq garden. we pre bought ny passes before we went and found them good value but you need to use them to cover the cost , depends on what you are doing as lots of free stuff in ny. Walk the high line is you get a chance .

Great place around the corner from the New Yorker, the Tryp Manhattan stayed there in June. Great family room with 2 bathrooms. Walking distance to Times Square next door to Police precinct so well safe. IMAX cinema just around corner too. Check out reviews on Triapadvisor

Got a good deal on Double Tree in Times Square a couple of years ago. Part of Hilton group and directly on the Square. Good place if you can get a deal, ideally with breakfast included.

Check Hilton site or LateRooms.com etc

Also look up coupons/deals on line. I got one for General Motors, and used it on line for 20% off at a hotel chain. They never check if you work for them or not
