    Tablet help

My dear, grey-haired old mother has decided now is the time to get online. She wants to be able to surf the web, kick my arse at online Scrabble, watch the i-player and read books. She loves my basic Kindle but wants all the other stuff in the same piece of kit, without it costing the earth for it to be light enough to read in bed but powerful enough to be genuinely useful. And easy enough for a novice to use without running up a huge phone bill to the helpline (me!).

Does she want a) i-Pad mini, b) Kindle fire HD or c) Nexus 7 or d) something else entirely?

I've read a lot of reviews and am actually now more confused than ever. Any strong opinions or advice?

I'd go Kindle Fire HD. The iPad mini is a lot of dough.

I would have recommended the Nexus 7, but mine shattered after dropping it from about 2 inches. It doesn't have Gorilla Glass which is a feature you definitely want.

          Edit.

Great to see you posting McCloud. You've been missed around here.

Nexus 7 all the way! Can't say enough good things about them.

                  Btw, welcome back McCloud!

Had a little think about this. For value and bang for buck I'd say nexus all the way.

But, does the mammy have a smart phone of any kind already? If she has an iphone/Android then you should stick in the same eco system.

My mam loves her iPhone and is a flyer on it but she's lost on my android tablet. She's not going to bother learning a new system at this stage.

The nexus is good enough and cheap enough that if she doesn't like it you can keep it and nobody loses out.

I know Fitzy had a bad experience with his dropped one but I've recommended them to a fair few folks and they've all been very positive about them. Some of them wouldn't be all that gentle with them either.

I've been looking at the nexus myself for the mother in law as she doesn't have a smart phone (and doesn't want one) but she does want something that she can do some internetting on, send a few mails, and most importantly, show off pics of her grandkids. All while being small enough to stick in a handbag.

We decided to go with the nexus because it does all the above and if she was to damage it or break it (spilt water bottles in the bag have been known to happen) it's not going to be as expensive to replace as an iPad.

That's my take on it anyway.

It's not just me! Google "Nexus 7 screen crack". Apparently they crack by themselves ..

At the very least get a really good bumper for them ..

Thanks for that SRG. Won't take long I reckon as I've lost my sense of humour as well as my long memory. Could be in for a bumpy ride

Rides are usually bumpy, you have not forgotten that surely.
