Firewalls.

I noticed my Sygate Personal Firewall wasn't starting automatically on bootup.

It seems it's no longer supported by Symantec following their buyout of Sygate.

Anyone recommend a good free alternative firewall please?

Yep but this old home pc runs Windows 98SE, with which Comodo will not work apparently.

      Any more suggestions?

The zonelabs firewall is very good, and free, it might support 98SE, I'm not sure

No self-respecting virus would be seen dead on a PC running 98SE!

          Why not install Firefox?

Try the old versions of Tiny - it was an excellent free firewall product before they decided to charge for it.

I was updating to the latest version of Comodo over the weekend and I ended up having to reinstall windows because of it. After Comodo had installed, it told me that a restart was needed, when i restarted, there was a key windows dll file missing and windows would not load.
Therefore, I can't recommend installing the new version of Comodo. Any suggestions of a new firewall to install? Preferably freeware.

Zone Alarm is free and seems to work fine for me.

Since when is Zone Alarm free? Thought you had to pay for that.

Couple years or so AFAIK. Just their free firewall (no security package or OS firewall).

I've been running ZoneAlarm firewall, AVG Free, Spybot S&D and the odd time Prevx and trend micro stuff for the past 6 months. Not the tightest or deepest I know, but it seems fine...fingers crossed. Actually just now was updating iTunes and ZoneAlarm popped up asking about the "bonjour service" connection - so it seems to be doing something...

                          de nada.

Friend of mine told me about that free combo and that it didn't make sense to pay for security packages (for our purposes). I think he's right, spybot S&D was picking up stuff that Macafee at home and symantec at work weren't and and these have subsciption fees! ( A trojan once and loads of spyware) Zone Alarm works well as it "learns" your computer you can get it to permanently or temporarily allow stuff when it pops up. One gripe so far however, I think I just permanently allowed something yesterday by accident and I don't know what it was! I can't find this through program logs and not being too techie, I like user friendly info like this. Oh well, I'll just reinstall it and start over!

Yeah, what is this bonjour service ? I saw it had installed itself recently in my AVG folder at home. Anyone know what it is and can it be got rid of without causing anything to go into cardiac arrest ?

Bonjour is pretty harmless. It's some kind of networking protocol for apple laptops that is bunched with itunes for some reason. It just locates other computers and printers afaik. Doesn't do any damage and doesn't eat up much if any RAM. Not sure if itunes will continue to work if you uninstall Bonjour though.
