    Global Warming Swindle

just watching the documentary called The great Global Warming Swindle on BBC at the moment. Seems to have some genuine Professor types and World renowned experts talking a whole load of sense, that Humans are NOT responsible in any way for Global warming. There is more CO2 coming from the current active volcano's than all the worlds factories put together. That CO2 only accounts for 0.45 of the the Worlds atmosphere andcould not have any real effect on Climate at all. Makes a very interesting program.

Sponsors are the issue, I'm afraid McCloud. The film emanates from the same stable as "against nature".

May not mean much to many in Ireland, but it's summed up by a post on the C4 board:

The forthcoming 'documentary' casting doubt on global warming is made by the same bunch that brought you the controversial and plain mendacious "Against Nature" series. That was directed by Martin Durkin, who's a close mate and follower of Frank Furedi, leader of the secretive grouplet that started life in the 80s as the Trotskyist "Revolutionary Communist Party" (though renowned at the time for being neither revolutionary nor communist). The RCP mutated into the "LM Project" (after its house journal "Living Marxism") which specialised in "media entryism", gaining an influence in broadcast media through careful recruitment which enabled it to punch way above its weight and get a dispoportionate amount of airtime on TV and radio. LM then lost a libel suit brought against it by ITN over its mendacious allegation that the Bosnian Serb concentration camp at Omarska didn't exist, and went bust. It relaunched itself, phoenix-like, as the Institute of Ideas, and hydra-like appeared in a number of different guises as front organisations (a classic tactic of Trotskyist sects), such as Spiked Online, Sense About Science, and many other fronts too numerous to mention here (see links below for further info).

The main principles of this exclusive sect/cult are:

      1. Unrestricted economic progress.
      2. A rabid anti-Green stance (following from 1, as Greens are seen as hindering economic growth).
      3. "Unconditional support" for nations under attack by imperialism, hence the sect's highly controversial support of the Serb side in the Balkan Wars of the 80s.
      4. A belief in "Enlightenment values" and humanism.
      5. A deep loathing of the Left in all its guises.
      6. An uncompromising 'freedom from' libertarianism, akin to that promulgated by Right groupings in the US.

RCP/LM personnel, in particular Frank "Dear Leader" Furedi, featured prominently in Against Nature, which was rightly censured by TV authorities for seriously misrepresenting and misquoting Greens who appeared on the programme. In the discussion after the last prog in the series, George Monbiot immediately said that the series was sponsored and made by the RCP/LM, to which Durkin replied with lots of bluster about "witch-hunts" but at no time denied the accusation. It'll be interesting to see, if there is a discussion after this programme, what he has to say about his backers.

This is the new talking point for the Exxon-Mobil lobby, as evidenced by the director of a new "documentary" to be shown on British television entitled "The Great Global Warming Swindle". Here's how that director, Martin Durkin, characterized his film:

<BLOCKQUOTE>Controversial director Martin Durkin said: "You can see the problems with the science of global warming, but people just don't believe you - it's taken 10 years to get this commissioned.

"I think it will go down in history as the first chapter in a new era of the relationship between scientists and society. Legitimate scientists - people with qualifications - are the bad guys.

"It is a big story that is going to cause controversy. "It's very rare that a film changes history, but I think this is a turning point and in five years the idea that the greenhouse effect is the main reason behind global warming will be seen as total bo***cks.</BLOCKQUOTE>

Total bo***cks? Interesting claim. So who exactly is Martin Durkin, the man who claims he will change history by slaying the evil dragon myth of global warming? Here's what The Independent has to say about him in its report on the film:

<BLOCKQUOTE>Martin Durkin, for his part, achieved notoriety when his previous series on the environment for the channel, called Against Nature , was roundly condemned by the Independent Television Commission for misleading contributors on the purpose of the programmes, and for editing four interviewees in a way that "distorted or mispresented their known views".

Channel 4 was forced to issue a humiliating apology. But it seems to have forgiven Mr Durkin and sees no need to make special checks on the accuracy of the programme. For his part, the film-maker accepts the charge of misleading contributors, but describes the verdict of distortion as "complete tosh."</BLOCKQUOTE>

Complete tosh (I love these British expressions by the way)? This from a man with a known history of distorting science in order to deceive the public. And not just about global warming either. Here's what he sold to Channel 4's science series as a reputable report in 1998 that claimed scientific studies proved silicon breast implants not only were safe, they actually reduced the risk of breast cancer:

<BLOCKQUOTE>In October 1998, a television producer named Martin Durkin took a proposal to the BBC's science series, Horizon. Silicone breast implants, he claimed, far from harming women, were in fact beneficial, reducing the risk of breast cancer. Horizon commissioned a researcher to find out whether or not his assertion was true.

After a thorough review, the researcher reported that Mr

You shouldn't jak it in altogether Shep. Rightly or wrongly, most people would assume that a major broadcaster would have some standards in who it commissions. I'm amazed that that Living Marxism mob are still being given money to peddle their s**te. One of them had a column in the Guardian last week once again denying the existance of extermination camps during the balkan war.

They're a weird bunch, and Durkin has such clear form in this area that he shouldn'tbe allowed to hide. I mean, people havediffering views on Richard Dawkins, but he is front and centre on all of his work and you can judge itaccordingly depending on your views. This guy seems to get away withproducing this s**te that 4 then run as a"major Channel 4 documentary".

It's infuriating. Decades of scientific work brought together in the recent IPCC report - overwhelming evidence that these guys try to rebut with the odd cherry picked (and plain misrepresented) study. Then we all have to go back to having the same arguments all over again because (and here, for me is the rub) normal decent human beings find it difficult to conceive of the fact that there are people out there dishonest and self serving enough to make this s**t up. Or that national broadcasters are giving them a platform.

The media's handling of the climatechangedebate (and most scientific controversy for that matter) is an abject disgrace.

That's the thing, OD - what is there to lose? Apart from the big oil companies (whose model is ultimately unsustainable) it's a win all round. Less pollution, a more sustainable future and massive economic benefits for the countries that pick up the ball and run with it on the technology front.

We're (potentially) on the threshold of another industrial revolution here - complete restructuring of our modes of production and consumption.

having watched the show i don't think he can be accused of misleading or misprepresenting the contributors to this one... they were all very adament that the greenhouse effect claims were untrue. Not saying that these guys are gospel but they were all convined of the fact.

Anyways it would be nice if the greenhouse effect didn't exist but regardless we should be cutting emissions and recycling as much as possible
