Eco friendly trains arrive in dublin

    <DIV>First eco-friendly trains arrive
    06/03/2007 - 15:32:17

The first 12 carriages in a new €400m eco-friendly fleet of trains arrived at Dublin Port today.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Designed for the intercity routes, the rolling stock will run between Sligo and Dublin from the autumn following a short test run.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>They are part of a record 183-carriage order of rolling stock trains for Iarnrod Eireann which Transport Minister Martin Cullen said will transform services from the oldest in the European Union to the newest by the end of next year.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Services to and from Sligo, Mayo, Galway, Limerick, Kerry, Waterford, Rosslare, Carlow, Portlaoise and Athlone to Dublin will benefit.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Mr Cullen said: “Comfort and frequency are set to improve on these routes, courtesy of the new carriage fleet.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>“In order to get people to leave their cars at home and use public transport, we have to offer the best facilities and people deserve the best possible services”.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>The new railcars are an eco-friendly fleet with reduced emissions meeting EU directives not in force until 2009 and 2012.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>They will include automatic PA and information display systems; air-conditioning; CCTV; modern catering; individual seating and advanced safety features.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>The carriages will improve the journey for people in Maynooth, Kilcock, Enfield, Mullingar, Edgesworthtown, Longford, Dromod, Carrick on Shannon, Boyle, Ballymote, Collooney and Sligo.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
    <DIV>
Dr John Lynch, CIE chairman, said the investment will ensure every single rail customer will be able to travel on modern, quality trains, designed with the latest customer needs in mind.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>“The transformation of our rail service is extraordinary – we have totally rebuilt our network, we have dramatically expanded commuter capacity, and now we are completing the task of a total renewal of our Intercity fleet,” Dr Lynch said.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>The first set of 12 railcars arrived by ship from Korea.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Iarnrod Eireann revealed how the new carriages would improve services with hourly services now running between Dublin and Cork every day.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Other hourly services include the Dublin to Limerick and Galway during peak times and every two hours outside of that.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>The Waterford and Sligo lines have trains running to Dublin every two hours.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Frequency is also being improved on the Westport, Tralee and Rosslare service.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>“The new fleet of 183 carriages will transform quality, comfort and frequency of Intercity and long-distance commuter services across the network,” said Iarnrod Eireann spokesman Barry Kenny.</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>“They will complete the process of transforming Iarnrod Eireann’s fleet from the oldest in the EU to the newest.”</DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>

Wish they'd considerdoing something about putting a viable passenger rail service along themuch vaunted Atlantic Corridor to offer some alternative to road between Cork/Limerick/Galway and the towns in between.

I'm all for new rail fleet et al, but why does every damn thing we build or buyhave to feed into an already overcongested Dublin ?

My overcrowded commuter train was stuck for 12 minutes in the badlands this evening - seemingly the train ahead had "problems with its doors" and couldn't pull out of the station ahead of us. The carriage windows don't open and the temperature must have been close to 90° before we started moving again. Very unpleasant.
