    Presidential Election

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-new...-37297977.html

    Let the character assassinations begin!

    Way Hey!

BTW, in case you're in favour of Escorting as a career, he's also for the death penalty for assaults on the elderly and deporting non Irish nationals.

Also. His art is dire. Criminal over ambitious dross. A total con. Foisted on a pretentious but naive Irish market by fork tongued slieveen art dealers.

Likes dogs. Has their vote sewn up.

Sean Gallagher gets the 4 Councils needed,
      Joan Freeman on 3
      Gavin Duffy on 2

more Gombean men (and women) vote tonight, to show they actually do do something or have some power..

How any of Gallagher, Duffy, Freeman or Sharkey could hope to hold a candle to Michael D is beyond me. He has put in a top class seven years.
And at least one councillor in Leitrim had the guts to say the same thing today.

"Cllr Des Guckian (Independent) opposed the motion.

"I am personally very happy with Michael D. Higgins as Uactarain na hEireann. He has shown that he has great intelligence for the job and he is very good at managing the functions of the presidency in the proper way," he said.

"To me he is like a bright beacon of light in a very dark sea of political intrigue. As to your proposed candidate (Gallagher) seven years ago I did not understand what he stood for then and having heard him here last week, I'm still none the wiser," he said."

And none of them stand a chance of getting elected, but their egos tell them otherwise, and it’s their egos that drive them to seek the limelight in the first place, because none of them are anywhere near as successfully as they would lead you to believe.

That said its a gamble worth taking because at 250k pa for 7 years and a 50% pension who wouldn’t be interested.

Michael D should retire, just as he said he would initially.

If there was one other semi credible candidate coming forward you might have a point

Looks a pretty thin list of alternatives to Michael D, who has turned out better than I’d thought. Perhaps the reluctance to challenge an incumbent, and the attitude of the larger parties has caused this. (I’m not saying it should be another party political bun fight).

Like everything it comes down to money.
The parties are reluctant to put someone forward because they have zero hope of winning and elections are expensive to run.

Im surprised that the councils are entertaining some of the candidates that are in the hunt, with the exception of Joan Freeman (and hers is slim) none of the other candidates have any Political experience and only she has a track record of public service.

Im of the view that these ego tripping dragons are going to cost the taxpayer millions and would be better suited to withdrawing from the race, allowing Micky D roll over into another term and building towards a decent campaign in 7 years time.

i agree, although I haven’t been able to access any of the debates etc, and just relying on what I can read on web. Unless there is going to be a realistic contest- I’m not sure what is served by requiring one.

There have not been any debates yet, some people are still looking for enough nominations from the councils.

The ego hunters probably see this as a cheap way to have the country talking about them before Michael D wins by a landslide in a poorly attended vote

Looks like Liadh Ní Riada will be announced as SF candidate. While I welcome SFs commitment to democracy, I feel very uncomfortable with the idea that SF would be in government, or hold a flagship office in the State. Her selection looks like (yet another) political master stroke by SF, and she seems to me head and shoulders above the other candidates, and will poll very well. Have FG/FF made a gaff by allowing MIchael D a free pass?

SF have all but admitted the whole thing is trial run to raise their profile, just like the Abortion referendum where you saw more posters featuring Mary Lou's face rather than anything about the referendum.
