    Dr. Sean Kelly honoured

FORMER GAA president Sean Kelly was yesterday conferred with an honorary doctorate from the Dublin Institute of Technology.

Mr Kelly, who is the current chair of the Irish Institute for Sport, is pictured above with his daughter Julie (11), after he was honoured in a ceremony at St Patrick's Cathedral by DIT president Prof Brian Norton. "During his term in office Sean Kelly distinguished himself as one of the finest presidents in the history of the GAA," said Prof Norton.

"He led Ireland's largest sporting organisation with authority and dignity, to the betterment not only of the GAA itself but Irish sport and society in general."

Mr Kelly was credited with the opening of Croke Park to foreign sports as well as the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics. "By managing division within the association Sean displayed tremendous political skill and foresight." ;si=1776664&issue_id=15257
