    Double Glazed Windows

Someone mentioned on radio that there are companies up North who will come down and do Double Glazing on your house a lot cheaper than local companies.

anyone know what companies will travel to Cork? Anyone have any experience with it?

Friend is getting a company from NI to install his solar panels etc they seem to be a lot cheaper then our home grown. Will find out if they do double glazing as well.

They would have to be very competitive to beat Munster Joinery at the moment was very happy with the quote i got from them earlier in the year and cant see how they would have increased that much since.

Same here, it's been a year since the thought occured to me
"I should definitely get double glazing" what with the old dining
room window nearly hanging off. I'm getting some quotes this
weekend. It's very hard to know who to go with

If you can go triple glazing you should...

Sister is building her house and is going with a crowd in Beara
who apparently do a very robust steel reinforced double
glazed window, and she has gone with them, even though they
                are more expensive than MJ.

MJ have a triple glazed option which works out at a similar
price to Beara DG, but Munster J have a rep lately of inferior
                quality...

i just got first quote and it seems very expensive. They are big windows to be fair.

I was told last year by someone to be careful what supplier you use as the seals on the cheapest windows tend to shrink

I'm nor sure who he said but has anyone else heard similar?

Edit: Lenden, could have been MJ that was mentioned to me alright

Get a good few quotes before deciding. The problem can be
the quality of the windows and whether they have the steel
reinforcements. For larger windows they could begin to sag in
a few years time if they don't. If you have anyone that can
recommend a company your sorted, unfortunately I don't. My
cheapest quote so far has been 1500 sterling for 4 large
enough windows. Pretty steep still but a company with a good
reputation. Still though, going to shop around some more

Be very careful what you get. Simple double-glazed won't do much for you. You should go for tested and certified high quality windows with low u-value. A good u-value for the whole window (including frame) is about 1.4 watts/m2K.

If your supplier can't give you info on u-value and certification then stay away from his stuff.

out of curiousity, has anyone ever had an issue with cavity wall insulation falling out of the walls when getting new windows in?

shouldn't be a problem! What kind of insulation have you?
