What will you be using the camera for? How big/small do you want it to be? Do you want manual control/point'n'shoot or numerous 'modes'. What size/quality prints do you require? Are you interested in 'special features' (e.g. video, sound, panomaric view, etc). Is speed of the essence (processor speed)? Do you need a rugged (or waterproof) model? Do you want a name (Canon, Nikon, Fuji, etc)?

Some of the questions you might want to ask above before browsing.....

I have a Samsung Digimax L85 (8.1 Mega Pixels) HDMI optional. The purists might frown but it takes a great picture. Does video footage as well.

I bought a Kodak Easyshare a few years ago and have found it very robust (banged it around a bit), well built, with handy s/ware. In today's market you would be looking at a major brand name, with about 8 MP. Optical zoom is the key form of zoom(don't lose pic. quality when you zoom in), so 10+ with that. A large SD card also, 1GB. Packages on ebay can be very good value, price wise, and bundle the SD card etc, for memory.

Have a look at this site : http://www.steves-digicams.com/

He reviews all models, and includes sample photos from each on the site.

I bought the Canon Ixus 60 as mentioned by Kerry-Exile above, it got a great review on the site and I am very happy with it.

                  www.computeruniverse.net

                  www.connscameras.ie

Used both of these for buying everything from buying digital SLRs to compact digital cameras. I use connscameras as a base for research and get it cheaper on computer universe.

Re. memory cards, you will probably end up buying an upgrade to 512Mb or 1Gb, but look at the speed of the card before purchasing (some cards have a couple of secs delay between shots, while they're processing and storing the shot). That can be a pain. And xD is supplanting SD (& is quicker), but you're likely to be constrained here by the camera manufacturer. Try www.shop4memory.com I've found them to be far cheaper than anywhere else.

Recently got my mother a Canon Ixus 75 from www.pixmania.com, price around €300, with a Sandisk 1GB ultra II card from www.mymemory.co.uk for €40. Would recommend both. The camera also does video, and the pictures are very good quality. She finds it very easy to use - so that's saying a lot

Currently looking at the following camera - any feedback from more learned people on the subject than myself would be most kind...

Fuji FinePix S5600 Zoom that boasts an impressive 10x optical zoom.
Get shots of an unrivalled realism with the 5.1 megapixel sensor and Fujifilm Real Photo Technology.
Highly practical, the FinePix S5600 Zoom has an "Anti-Blur" mode to minimise blur caused by quick shooting or a poorly judged focus.
Use the video mode on your S5600 Zoom to shoot short films with sound.
Take professional quality shots everytime with the user-friendly FinePix S5600.

                              coming in at £141
