Saddam execution to happen 'tomorrow at latest'

@@@@SPAN ="story">Saddam Hussein will be executed by tomorrow at the latest, an Iraqi judge has said.
    @@@@/SPAN>

I'm not generally in favour of the death penalty because of the dreadful possibility of a mistake, which has happened several times in the relatively recent past. In this case though,I don't really have any great qualms.

Make him a martyr. Death penalty is wrong, no need for qualifications. Whatever about the ramifications of condemning an innocent man the whole premise of capital punishment is flawed in the extreme.

I'm sure a certain fundamental christian who believes in creationism won't mind ignoring the Fifth Commandment to celebrate the demise of the man who tried to kill his daddy.

True - just think of those crazy terrorists that everyone condemned (except Harry) back in 1916 - until the Brits shot them.

Result: instant martyrdom - and today they all have railway stations called after them (Euston, Paddington, Victoria, Charing,Waterloo, etc.)

The Iraqi's have a big problem since the Yanks handed Saddam over to them. While the Yanks had him, no one was going to try and spring him loose.

The Iraqi government is in such a precarious position, they can't afford to hold Saddam for long in case someone does set him free. There is so much money available that even anti-Saddam government officials can't be trusted to keep him under lock & key. (Saddam's son emptied the Treasury of $650m+ in cash on the day of the US invasion)

You're not too far off the mark there,Laz. Just heard on the News that the proceedings are to be filmed and will be broadcast some time afterwards. Not sure who's sponsoring this partcular broadcast but all suggestions welcome. Magnificent prize for the most tasteless.

                US authorities deny Saddam handover

                29 December 2006 21:57
A US official in Baghdad has denied reports that the former Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein, has been handed over to Iraqi authorites to be hanged.

There is speculation that the former Iraqi dictator will be executed by Saturday at the latest.

US diplomats around the world have been advised by the State Department to prepare for the execution of Saddam Hussein within days.

Earlier, the head of Saddam's defence team Khalil al-Dulaimi said: 'The American side has notified us that they have handed over the president to the Iraqi authorities.'

He added: 'They told us the president is no longer under the authority of the American forces and they requested us not to go to Baghdad.'

The defence lawyer also said he thought Saddam might well die on Saturday after lawyers were told to collect his belongings.

US making good progress - Bush

The US president, George W Bush, has said his administration is making good progress in formulating a new strategy for Iraq, but needed a little more time to finalise its plans.

He made the comments after meeting senior advisors at his ranch in Texas.

He is expected to announce the policy changes early in the New Year.

Speaking last night, Mr Bush said it was important that the political establishment in the United States was united in its support for the Iraqi government.

Just a pity the people who armed him during the 1980s didn't swing as well. Reagan has gone, but it's not too late to bring Thatcher to justice.
There are only two roads, victory for the working class, freedom, or victory for the fascists which means tyranny. Both combatants know what\'s in store for the loser.

think the whole thing is a bit barbaric and very uncivilised, I know the man was a monster and a lying rat but his execution by media by effectively occupying forces will cause serious problems in the country and the middle east as a whole. Better off sticking in a cell for the rest of his life and letting him answer to God. It doesn't do much good to kill anyone.
