Ireland's World Cup squad Named - Post 1235

Based on current form here is the squad I would pick which shows a lot of depth in numerous positions -

    Healy, McGrath, Kilcoyne
    Best, Cronin, Strauss
    Ross, Moore, Furlong/Fitzpatrick
    POC, Toner, Henderson, Ryan
    POM, SOB, Heaslip, O'Donnell, Ruddock/Murphy
    Murray, Reddan, Marmion
    Sexton, Jackson, Madigan
    Henshaw, Payne, Earls
    Bowe, Zebo, Luke/Trimble
    Rob Kearney

This leaves a team of Cronin, Strauss, Fitzpatrick/Archer, Touhy, McCarthy, Ruddock/Murphy, Henry, Wilson, Boss, Keatley, Luke/Trimble, Marshall, Darcy, McFadden, Jones not included.

I think now we are demonstrating that we have the talent to rest players and beat the weaker nations which means we can concentrate on the big game against France with a rested team.

Wow some great players being left behind. Is the world cup squad limited to 31?

In my opinion Keatley, Trimble and James Cronin should all be in the squad. It wouldn't suprise me, If trimble replaces Zebo on the starting team (Assuming he gets some good game time between now and then). Also i think earls/Fitz will be a close call for possible centre cover

It'd be an awful shame for which ever of Ruddock, Murphy, Henry or dare i say it TOD don't make the plane.

If players pick up injuries, can replacements be called up?

Has Naomh Joe taught Ricard O'Strauss the ancient art of bi-location?
A case of 'they seek him here, they seek him there'?

The evidence so far is the squad will only be used as injury cover though a WC campaign might necessitate resting some players for the "bigger" games.

Depends on the split between forwards and backs , i think he will go 18 forwards and 13 backs .

prop Healy, Ross, Mc Grath , Moore and Bent
            Hooker Best, Cronin, Strauss
            2 Row POC, Tonner, Ryan
            BR/2Row Henderson
B Row SOB, POM, Heaslip,Henry, Ruddock

            SH Murray, Reddan, Marmion
            FH Sexton, Keatley
            FH/12 Madigan
            Centers Henshaw, Payne , Earls
            Back 3 Kearney, Bowe,Zebo

Covers both sides , he will need to take 5 Props . JS will also take two specialised FB's hence Jones . If Chris Henry gets back to fitness he will take TOD's place and Ruddock will take Murphy's spot . Trimble may run out of time with only the warm up matches . Earls will keep Fitz out as more specialised OC .

Trimble got a 2 year central contract last week. Injury free he's going to the WC and if he's fit he might start. Joe's a big fan.
I always knew Madigan was a closet Scrum Half. Ignore All things that suggest Continuity.

I fully agree OL, what I like is the quality of outside inside's omittees and the range of positions they can cover in systemjoe in the case of the inevitable injury or five.

But are teams allowed to just parachute players in as injuries occur? Are there limits on the numbers like a European squad?

Whoever is injured has to leave the squad before the new player can join it. Some players you would want to keep them in the squad in the hope that they would be fit for the later stages of the competition (like say if Sexton tweaked his hammy and could be ok in a week or two).

What about Muldowney for secondrow. His playing great stuff.
When their numbers dwindled from 50 to 8, the other dwarves began to suspect Hungry

White is the clear third choice TH, he's already discounted Furlong as one for the future but not the present.

Not sure why people think Ryan would be parachuted in when he's barely played rugby in 2 years and hasn't been in any Schmidt squads yet. Tuohy, McCarthy or Diack for coverage are more likely. Most likely is probably Foley who has played under Schmidt and performed well. Maybe Mick Kearney could be a bolter, he's absolutely the form player in the position.

Ruddock, Murphy and Henry have always been higher in the pecking order than TOD.

Schmidt clearly doesn't rate Marmion and has put Boss back ahead of him after his dreadful wolfhounds performance. All the Stringer to Leinster talk is on the assumption of Boss going to the RWC as well so seems they're assuming Marmion won't feature either.

Fitzgerald is playing centre regularly for Leinster and has replaced Earls as the extra man in recent squads so also fair to say Schmidt rates him higher than Keith as a utility back. Trimble if fit is an absolute certainty and possible starter.

Felix is a strong contender for selection.

Debatable where Jackson is, Schmidt might have completely lost trust in him like he has with Marmion and Luke Marshall.

I'd be surprised if D'arcy doesn't travel as first choice backup to both centres, he's in the only player in the position with proven international experience. If Schmidt was planning to discard him he wouldn't have started for the wolfhounds or against Australia.
                            Healy, McGrath, Kilcoyne
                            Best, Cronin, Strauss
                            Ross, Moore, White
                            POC, Toner, Henderson, Foley
                            POM, SOB, Heaslip, Ruddock, Murphy/Henry
                            Murray, Reddan, Boss
                            Sexton, Keatley, Madigan
                            Henshaw, Payne, D'arcy
                            Bowe, Trimble, Zebo/Felix
                            Rob Kearney
