    Diaspora Players

How hard is the IRFU chasing diaspora players? Byron Kelleher is a guy I played with at U-20 level in NZ and had a father from Cork.

Just watched a school game here on the TV between Rosmini and Massey High. The Rosmini captain Conor O'Leary is a tighthead prop and absolutely outstanding. Has everything, size, excelleny mobility and can scrum.

Don't know if he is Irish qualified or not (only has an Irish name and attends a Catholic school) but the IRFU must make enquiries, this guy is that good.

Maybe there should be a kind of scholarship brought in. 1 or 2 players of Irish heritage every year are invited to go to a provincial academy. It should not be too pushy as the player (despite the Irish heritage) may want to play for the country that he grew up in.

At the end of the year he might decide that he wants to stay in Ireland or go back home. Either way he will have benefitted from being in such a set up. And who knows, he may come back. Given the way NZ recruit from the islands we should not feel too guilty.

It would need a damn good scout. Rob Penney would no doubt have one in mind.

That sounds like a very good idea.It wouldn't take much to set up and could possibly be the answer to munsters finacial constraints in buying in cover where we are short, and would benefit our own young players having players come in pushing them harder, making it even more competitive to gain a development contract.

Is Barry O'Mahony still involved with WP, or could he quietly help out on this front in the Cape?

Look at all the Oz Super rugby squads. Loads of lads with Irish names e.g Bernard Foley is ten for the Waratahs
