      <DIV =TailParas>Minnows' pool of death </DIV>
<DIV =TailParas>HAVE boots will travel. You can't fault Portugal's commitment to the World Cup cause - no wonder the celebrations got a little out of hand in Montevideo the other night - but you have to fear for the World Cup minnows who clinched the 20th and last place in this year's tournament against Uruguay last week. They will now line up in Pool C against New Zealand, Scotland, Italy and Romania. </DIV>
<DIV =TailParas>Exhausting travel, the accumulation of air miles, pain and frequent defeats has marked their extraordinary qualification odyssey. After finishing third in last season's European Nations Cup, Portugal moved straight on to a Round Five qualifier against Italy and were promptly thrashed 83-0 in L'Aquila. Ouch! Remarkably they then produced a rabbit from the hat to defeat Russia 26-23 in Portugal but lost </DIV>
<DIV =TailParas>17-3 to Georgia in Tbilisi and drew the return game 11-11 in the first round of the repechage. </DIV>
<DIV =TailParas>So, next came home and away matches against Morocco - they won 10-5 in Casablanca and 16-15 in Lisbon - before the double header against old rivals Uruguay. The two teams have gone head to head for a World Cup place before and on this occasion Portugal took the first leg 12-5 at the Estadio Universitario in Lisbon but lost 18-12 to Uruguay in Montevideo, despite the home side having their best forward - lock Rodrigo Capo - sent off after just two minutes. </DIV>
<DIV =TailParas>The Portuguese are predominantly amateurs and have just two professionals in their ranks - centre Diogo Mateus is a member of the Munster Academy and made his Magners League debut last October and lock Gonzalo Uva plays T14 rugby for Montpellier in France. </DIV>
