Jones ruled out of Ireland's RWC squad

Ireland's Felix Jones has been ruled out of the Rugby World Cup, having sustained a foot injury in Saturday's defeat to France at Aviva Stadium.

Following an MRI scan that was undertaken today, it was confirmed the Ireland full-back has sustained an injury to one of the stabilising ligaments in his foot, following an awkward fall in the second period of Ireland's 22-26 defeat to Les Bleus.

The Munster player had to be helped from the field with ten minutes remaining in the encounter.
The injury will be further reviewed by a specialist to rule out the need for surgery, but it will require a six-week period of immobilisation.

The injury means that Jones has been ruled out of contention for selection for Ireland's Rugby World Cup squad that is due to be announced tomorrow at 1pm.

Ireland manager Paul McNaughton said: "The squad and management are bitterly disappointed for Felix to suffer an injury at such a vital time in terms of selection for the final touring party.

"He had certainly put himself into contention over pre-season and the games in the last three weeks.
"We all wish him a speedy recovery and that he is back playing as soon as possible."
The injury will come as a severe blow to Jones, who has suffered from several injuries in his career. Most notably, he injured his neck playing for Munster against Glasgow Warriors in September 2009.

He returned to competitive action in September 2010 and played three games before injuring his knee against Ospreys the same month.

Jones was back playing for Munster in March of this year and managed to oust Paul Warwick as the first-choice full-back for the province.

It's believed that Jones was a certainty to be included in Declan Kidney's Rugby World Cup squad and his injury will raise questions as to whether Leicester Tigers' Geordan Murphy will now be included in Ireland's 30-man Rugby World Cup squad in his place.
Kidney announces the cup squad at 1pm tomorrow. You can watch that announcement live here on RTE.ie.

Cruel blow for the guy. But at least we'll have him for the HEC and he is young enough to make the spot his own on the national squad.

Tough on him. I remember seeing him play for Ireland A against England at some competition in Denver and he was outstanding then. It he could get one full season behind him, I think we could a star on the team.

"This was the performance Ireland had been threatening all championship but had only managed to produce in fits and starts. Defeats at the hands of France and Wales had put paid to their title aspirations, never mind a Grand Slam, but yesterday’s emphatic 24-8 win shows that this is a team moving in the right direction."

It's a cruel blow to the guy, has had more than his share of bad luck with injuries! I think he could have impressed if given a run in RWC

His expression leaving the pitch said it all.
It is truly dreadfully disappointing for him, because he really is a player of great ability.

Gutted for him. I think he could have been a sensation at the world cup. Still he'll be at the next one hopefully. He was definitely going too.

Churchill Cup 2008 - bt. England in the Final. Deccie was head coach. He was superb that day and anyone who saw it was enthralled by him.

he's had his 3 bits of bad luck now - he'll get a clear run at it from now - g'wan Felix!

God damn it anyway. Gutted for Felix, absolutely gutted. His time will come still, but should have been now.
                      Tis but a scratch.

Really Feel awful for Jones... i can only estimate the devastation that missing the World Cup, the pinnacle of his existence in his own head up to last saturday..... will cause to him. After what he went through with his neck, and the inspirational way he came back from it, it'd break your heart if you dwelled long enough on it. Hope he's back raring to go soon enough.

Gutted for Felix. He was a dead cert for the WC squad and might well have made the team. All the best to the lad in his recovery,I'm looking forward to seing him line out for Munster again soon.

                              Very sad news.
Only silver lining for me is that Felix, Fitz, Tomas, Spence will be hungry and in a hurry next season.
                              Gwan Joe!!
