    AIB Club International squad

The game is part of the IRFU Community Rugby Programme
and gives non contracted club players the opportunity to win
representative honours for Ireland and to showcase the club game at the
highest possible level. The game will also be televised live by RTE with a 7.05pm kick off.

The AIB Club International side will also play an away fixture against a similar Scotland side on the eve of the Scotland v Ireland Championship game next month.

The initial squad has been selected throughout the AIB League season
to date with club coaches asked to put forward names of opposition
players that have impressed them. In addition to this, a four man team
of selection advisors including Hugh McCaughey (Dungannon), Finbarr Dennehy (UCC), Stephen Rooney (Lansdowne) and Ciaran Smyth (Corinthians) have been monitoring games and recommending players for consideration.

The recommendations of the club coaches and selection advisors were then narrowed down by the Ireland Management team of Coach Geoff Moylan, Manager Mick Galwey, Assistant Coach Gerald McCarter and Assistant Manager Donal Brennan.

The selected squad represents 13 clubs from the AIB League
from all four provinces. The squad will come together for a training
session on Sunday, 18th February after which the Ireland team and
    replacements will be selected.

The team to play England Counties in the AIB Club International will be named by the Ireland management team at a media conference on Monday February 19th.

What a joke of a team, Anyone else think this? Thompson and Finn have been playing seconds for most of the season. Corrigan is only playing in rotation for lansdowne, Fiach isn't a relation of a scrum half, he picks takes two steps and snipes to hide his inability to pass the ball from one side.

Surly there are better players in the AIL, UL/Bohs are sitting second in the league and dont have anyone in the team, I think its a case of i'll scratch you back if you scratch mine if you see where the selectors are from.

Suggest you look back over the team lists for the season Spoof. You will find one or other or both in at least 75% of the team lists for the first team since this season started. I have all of them and can list them if you like.

thompson has been mainly coming off the bench.tadgh bennett has started most games hasnt he? finn is quite good, offered a dev. contract a couple of years back and turned it down.

side is a little odd.i know ive said this before, but its mad not having an AIL team without tom cregan on the panel, but its fairly widely known that himself and gaillimh dudnt get on at Shannon.

good luck to peter malone, hopefully he'll come back to bruff next year

Seems a little strange that UL Bohs don't have any players on the squad. Is it Rag-Week in UL?

Have gone back through the 14 1st teamlists I have available for competitive games from the start of this season. Thompson started in 8 matches and came on as a replacement in 4. Finn started in 7 and came on as a replacement in 1. Bennett started 7 and came on to replace Thompson in 1. I am missing full listings for 3 matches that I am aware of.

12 out of 14 first team matchesdoesn't sound like seconds rugby to me Spoof. 8 out of 14 maybe just about.

Wasn't it the same last year, players were picked from a variety of teams across the 3 AIL leagues in order to be somewhat representative?

AIB Club International Team to Play England Counties

The Ireland team to play England Counties in the AIB Club International on Friday, 23rd February has been named today at a media conference in Dublin.

The game is part of the IRFU Community Rugby Programme and gives non contracted club players the opportunity to win representative honours for Ireland and to showcase the club game at the highest possible level. The game will also be televised live by RTE with a 7.05pm kick off. The AIB Club International side will also play an away fixture against a similar Scotland selection on the eve of the Scotland v Ireland Championship game next month.

The initial squad has been selected throughout the AIB League season to date with club coaches asked to put forward names of opposition players that have impressed them. In addition to this, a four man team of selection advisors including Hugh McCaughey (Dungannon), Finbarr Dennehy (UCC), Stephen Rooney (Lansdowne) and Ciaran Smyth (Corinthians) have been monitoring games and recommending players for consideration.

The recommendations of the club coaches and selection advisors were then narrowed down by the Ireland Management team of Coach Geoff Moylan, Manager Mick Galwey, Assistant Coach Gerald McCarter and Assistant Manager Donal Brennan.

The only outstanding selection issue is at inside centre, where the management is waiting on Glen Telford to prove his fitness. If Telford does not pass a fitness test, then Philip Brophy will start the game.

The team will be captained by David Quinlan from Shannon.

Commenting on the game, Ireland Team Manager Mick Galwey said: "After the success of last year's game, myself, the management and players are really looking forward to playing in front of another big crowd in Donnybrook. It is the only game Dublin that evening and hopefully it will be another entertaining game, just as last year against Scotland was".

"The selection of this squad was a tough process with so many players to consider. The honour of representing not only Ireland, but the club game itself is a wonderful concept and will be even better if we win on Friday evening".

The Ireland team to Play England Counties in the AIB Club International in Donnybrook on Friday, 23rd February 2007 at 19.05hrs is as follows:

                        15 - Richard McCarter (Dungannon)
                        14 - Niall O'Brien (Clontarf)
                        13 - Kevin Hartigan (Garryowen)
                        12 - Glen Telford (Dungannon)/Philip Brophy (St.Mary's College)
11 - Cronan Healy (Cork Constitution)
                        10 - Andrew Thompson (Shannon)
                        9 - Fiach O'Loughlin (Clontarf)
                        1 - Dan O'Connell (Galwegians)
2 - Matthew Crockett (Dublin University)
                        3 - Simon Shawe (Ballymena)
                        4 - Merle O'Connor (Cork Constitution)

                          Quinlan skippers Irish clubs
                          Tuesday February 20th 2007

SHANNON'S David Quinlan will skipper the Irish side in Friday night's AIB Club international against England Counties at Donnybrook (7.05).

The starting line-up is made up completely of Division One players, with the exception of Dublin University hooker Matt Crockett. There is still some uncertainty about the inside centre spot because Dungannon's Glen Telford must prove his fitness.

Should he fail to make it, Philip Brophy of St Mary's College will come into the team. Manager Mick Galwey is well-pleased with the line-up.

He said: "The selection was tough with so many players to consider. The honour of not only representing Ireland, but also the club game itself, is a wonderful concept, and will be even better, if we win on Friday evening.

"After the success of last year's game against Scotland, myself, the manager, and the players, are really looking forward to the game in front of a big Donnybrook crowd."

Friday night's contest (live on RTE), will be the first of two club internationals for Ireland this season. The second takes place, away to Scotland, on the eve of the Six Nations clash between Scotland and Ireland next month.

IRELAND - R McCarter (Dungannon); N O'Brien (Clontarf), K Hartigan (Garryowen), G Telford (Dungannon)/P Brophy (St Mary's), C Healy (Cork Constitution); A Thompson (Shannon), F O'Loughlin (Clontarf); D O'Connell (Galwegians), M Crockett (Dublin University), S Shawe (Ballymena), M O'Connell (Cork Constitution), A Mahon (Lansdowne), P Malone (Garryowen), C Hartigan (Buccaneers), D Quinlan (Shannon) Capt. Reps: K Corrigan (Lansdowne), S Nolan (Terenure), S Crawford (Clontarf), F Coogan (Cork Constitution), M Bruce (Buccaneers), B Keeshaw (Dolphin), A Finn (Shannon).
