    IRB Rankings

There's a lot of talk about how we mustn' field "rookies" in any games until the end of this year because we will lose our world ranking and seeding for next WC. Well, leaving aside the fact that our "first choice" "golden generation" is playing like a bunch of worn out strangers anyway, I don't buy this.

    These are the current rankings.

Argentina are going to be without their French based players for the Scotland tour so I could see Scotland winning over there

We are within 10 points of Georgia now in the Rankings. Thats how good we are now in Rugby terms. Interesting times ahead for Irealnd.

10 points is a huge gap. Georgia would have to beat teams above them to bridge that gap, which means having to play them which won't happen. You could equally say we're only 12 points behind #1.

Aussiedub - Scotland are not going to win in Argentina. Not going to happen. Don't forget Argentina managed to field a 3rd XV in 2005 that could/should have beaten the Lions. I honestly don't think they're going to lose to Scotland.

I agree EO, lets play some of the younger players. The team is crying out for some youth. And if we don't play these players it won't matter what our ranking for the next World Cup will be because we will be bringing an untried squad to NZ in 4 years.

The young players in the fringes now will be playing a big part in NZ in 4 years.

It's not Scotland we have to worry about.. Fiji..

Fiji's victory in Lautoka did not result in a
positional change for them, although Ilie Tabua's side have improved
their rating points and reduced the deficit to Ireland above them in
eighth to a mere three tenths. The weekend
also witnessed the first summer internationals with world champions
South Africa impressively beating Six Nations champions Wales 43-17 in
Bloemfontein to give Peter de Villiers the perfect start to his reign
as coach. However this victory did not have
an impact on either side's ranking with South Africa remaining the
number one side - 1.22 rating points above New Zealand - and Wales
sixth after Warren Gatland's first defeat since taking over.New
Zealand also overcame Ireland 21-11 in the pouring rain in Wellington,
while Argentina repeated their RWC 2007 quarter-final victory over
Scotland with a 21-15 triumph in Rosario in Santiago Phelan's first
match as Pumas coach.Neither of these
results affected the rankings either, with the All Blacks and Argentina
remaining second and third respectively, more than 12 rating points
above eighth ranked Ireland and Scotland in 10th.

E O, I'd agree that we weren't playing well in the 6N, but like a lot of people I'd reason that our then manager was a lot of the problem. That's history now and with basically the same players we went to NZ and were leading NZ for much of that game. One very stupid penalty apart we were in with a shout and it was good to see the lads hammering away at the line up to the final whistle. OK we lost, but we could have snatched something (even if NZ were marginally better).

Which is why I disagree with the tone of your post and what we should be looking for. We should be looking ahead, not behind us. I believe we are every bit as good as Wales and we should be aiming to be above them on those rankings. Which is why we should be putting our best 22 out for the game against the Aussies. Quinny and Fitz are a loss, but then Paddy Wallace wasn't too bad either (I'll admit I was pleasantly surprised).

Best XV to start, best of the rest to be used to win it. I want to see a win against the Aussies.

super game. fiji completely dominated and thenboth tired and gave up a bit on around 60mins. they are very good, it looked like samoa wouldnt have scored if they didnt let up.

Dermot, it will go down if we lose (you always lose ranking points when you lose a game) though not by much considering the points difference and the fact we're playing away.

Didn't think they could catch us next week but from bbc online,

Scotland will need every man available and fit for selection if
there is to be any chance of securing the margin of victory which will
see the team rise up to eighth in the IRB rankings.

They need a 15 points margin of victory in the second Test to achieve that.

A tall order at any time and one which many will feel could have
been more easily achieved in Saturday's match, when Argentina were as
untried and untested as the Scots. A Scottish win in Buenos Aires against these Pumas will take a team effort nothing short of Herculean.
