Cardiff V Ulster - Referee

How come we had a Guinness Premiership ref? Was it payback for Alain Rolland reffing the AWC final last weekend? It was grand to have a reasonably competent ref in the ML. Can we have more of it please

    Lewis reffed last weekend.

And apart from getting in the way a few times, he was good. Everything is relative of course !

One of the Chelange's was down to ref but must have pulled out at the last moment so David Rose (?) must have been asked to step in - a welcome replacement.

At least the Irish provinces never have to endure Olan Trevor or Simon McTrowell reffing their ML games.

Good ref too I thought. Fair, tried to let the game flow a bit, best we've had this season I reckon.

Ah but that's different - The IRFUtells the refs and the coaches of both teams which teamEOS wants to win and then bothteams just go through the motions.

From watching the GP, he's been one of the best, it's a different beast from the ML as players don't commit to the ruck as much, which is why he was caught off guard tonight, with fringe movements.

As a ref, I reckon he's top class, not a "schoolmaster, policeman" and doesn't dominate the game, n'or does hegenerate ire among players, will be HC (doh) or 6N refnext year. I hope.

Agreed. The game could easily have boiled over but it went along quite smoothly. The players seemed to respond well to him and if we had performances like that each week rather than those served up by the likes of the Changlengs and Dickson it would be a welcome change.

How can they be SO bad ? Is it the training they get or is it just the current crop of Scottish refs is so bad and they are best of a bad lot ?

Also thought he was very good, stuck to his guns totally. Seemed he decided rolling away was a big issue and hammered it, which I though was excellent.

I wish I knew. Unfortunately I can't think of a Scottish referee that I rate remotely highly.
