Cheika to call quits in a year?

    @@@@SPAN ="post">
Leinster head coach Michael Cheika has revealed that both he and his
players are desperately hoping that the Heineken Cup goes ahead next
    season.

The future of the tournament looks bleak after French and English
clubs confirmed last week that they would be withdrawing from European
competition because of a dispute over voting rights and shares in
    Heineken Cup Limited.

An amicable resolution still looks a long way off but Cheika is praying that common sense eventually prevails.

"We're planning like it's going to go ahead. We're hoping that a
few egos might subside and see reason," he told reporters in Donnybrook
    on Tuesday.

"We're just preparing like we're going to be playing in the
tournament and, hopefully, the people who make these decisions get it
    sorted out.

"I'm not really into the politics of the situation but it would be a real shame if it didn't go ahead.

"From our point of view, I think that even though we may not have
had the results this year that we did last year, we're a better outfit
this season and with what we've got coming next year to strengthen our
squad it would be shame if we couldn't have a good crack at it.

"For me, @@@@SPAN style="font-weight: bold;">it would be my third of my three years here and it would be very disappointing not get another crack at it."

There has been talk that the tournament could go ahead next year -
but with clubs from the English and French first divisions taking the
    place of the rebels.

However, Cheika admitted that competing, or perhaps even winning, such a tournament wouldn't appeal to him.

"That's not the way we'd want to do it," he stated. "You want to compete against the best teams.

"I just hope it all gets sorted. We'll play whatever happens,
obviously, but we want to play against the best teams. That's what the
    Heineken Cup is all about."

Was there not a thread a couple of weeks back that he'd signed a 2 year extension to his contract?

He'd been offered an extension, seems he didn't take it.

Really? Wonder if the present HC impasse has anything to do with that...

Possibly. He probably shouldn't have been offered the extension from this years performances anyway. Had such a promising start to the season but it's gone to pieces.

He has a lot of business interests too (I wonder if these affect his capacity as coach) so maybe he's going to drop out of rugby altogether.
