Past good behaviour apparently and “glowing testimonies from England coach Eddie Jones and Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall, ensured he got the full 50% mitigation, so a 10-game ban became five.” (BBC)

This mitigation thing annoys me, even when it’s a week here or there, but 5 weeks reduction is ridiculous. It was an awful ‘tackle’- and whether or not he has had ‘good
        disciplinary record’.

“His bosses, who want him free to play ASAP, and a charity who want him to help them raise money, said he’s a great fella really, apart from a tendency to take people’s heads off.
Taking these entirely biased and self-interested testimonials into account, and ignoring inconvenient facts, the Panel concluded that boys will be boys.”

And to add to that he has lead an utterly blameless life on the field and has never done anything to suggest he has disciplinary issues.....

Amazingly... ‘The panel had accepted that the tackle was "reckless and not intentional". the video makes it perfectly clear he targeted the player- it wasn’t a collision he had to make ground towards Atkinson ( 18 year old academy player)- that was certainly intentional- perhaps he didn’t intended to injure the player - but it was a bloody awful lack of care by a far more experienced player. I can’t think of any other area where recklessness is a defence.

To be fair, by all accounts Farrell is a good guy. Working class rugby league guys usually are. He has lost the head on the field a lot and put in some cheap hits but his off-the-field stuff is commendable. At the same time, not sure what charity work could possibly have to do with mitigating beheading someone.

Being a sound lad off the field is completely irrelevant if he goes around causing potentially very serious injuries on it. That sort of mitigation is nonsense IMHO.

It should relate to the circumstances of the incident itself e.g. the other player ducked (a lot) at the last split second, and his previous disciplinary record on the field. Nothing else matters, and on both counts Farrell hadn’t a leg to stand on.

Leinster are going to go through the Todgers like the plague through a halting site.

Off the field mitigation shouldn't be a factor unless he's saving kids from burning buildings on a weekly basis or something of that magnitude. Charity work is great and all, I get it, but lets face facts. This is a guy who, along with plenty of others at his club, willingly schemed to financially juice Saracens to the point where there was only one team in the league who even stood a chance against them; he has a history of awful tackles, and he'd been previously suspended. They should have told him to enjoy his time off until after Christmas.
