Hopefully Very Few Irish Lions This Year :)

    Hi Folks,

Every cloud has a silver lining and all that. With Ireland's poor performances in the 6 nations to date and a potent Italy away in the rain to come, very few Irish players have put themselves in the shop window for Lions selection.

Now If Gatland would just bring all the b****y English, a good few of the Welsh, a fair sprinkling of Scots and maybe just BOD we could be all happy. (well for the next 4 years anyway)

Maybe this will be Kidney's final outstanding deed (&there have been many in fairness) for Irish rugby at this level i.e. getting as few of them picked as possible for the injury making Lions tour so that we can enjoy our best possible 6Nations & WCs with our best available players for the next 4 years!!

I hope there are plenty Irish Lions, but I suspect we will have 5 at most in the weekend squad.

Fantastic learning experience for the youngsters in the squad. I hope we see a fair few up and coming players involved.

The test side will be light on Paddies, but our lads are well capable of holding their own at midweek level

You're not really interested in the player's personal goals, are you?

And which young Irish players have come back from Lions tours better for the experience, Miller? D'Arcy? Earls? Heaslip? Fitzgerald? Ferris? Kearney? BOD came back from 2001 a better player but came back from 2005 and 2009 worse. Add in POC who was admittedly not young when he went in 2009 but has been nothing like the player since and I would say the reverse is the case. And did ROG learn much having the sh'te bate out of him by McRae? Sure it will be great to see the Irish lads fighting for the cause in the mid week games and carrying tackle bags.

Getting beyond losing games in which they enjoy 80% of possession would be quite a good start in terms of personal goals.

I wish that fewer Irish players wanted to go on the thing. If one of them didn't want to go, would they be able to say as much anyway? Hope in the case of Paulie we find out in the affirmative.

I'm with Daithi on this one, the Lions have ruined the last four years of Munster rugby. Fla, TOL and POC never got over it. Earls' confidence was shattered on tour too.

                        Too many games.
It is useless to attempt to reason a man out of a thing he was never reasoned into.

Every plan I have is the best plan in the room. Everybody get quiet and listen to it, and everybody will win

Flannery and O'Leary didn't go on the tour 4 years ago.

Do none of the players hold the view that it's a nonsense, empty tour of commercialism with no real point or purpose other than enhancing your brand and profile? Do they actually hold it in the same regard Sky wants everyone to hold it in?

I'd love if no Irish players went, I'll be hoping the Lions lose again but will support any Irish players that do go and hope they do well since they might as well if they're there. Always a conflicting watch with that viewpoint.

I think the Lions is the ultimate achievement as a player and I hope there's a truck load of Irish there. Off the top of my head the Lions definitely improved the following as players in recent times (and announced them to the global viewer as top quality players).........Davidson, PWallace, Woody, BOD, Henderson, DOC, POC, Kearney, Bowe, Heaslip.

Yes there have been injuries but as we've seen in the last 2 years players are just as likely to get injured with Munster/Ireland as they are with the Lions.
