    Presumably it turned out that the CCTV didn't show an innocent man being set about by a bunch of crazed thugs then?

      Well the Bob Casey version of events, which is likely to
      have come through the player grapevine, was that Powell
      was trying to have a bit of banter with a group of soccer
      fans who didn't take it as that and kicked his head in, with
      Payne jumping in to protect him. The fact they've worded
      it that way suggests he may have been relatively innocent
      in this but there was some previous agreement that if he
      gets into any bad publicity/outside trouble they can
      terminate contract. Bearing in mind there's feck all games
      really left anyway it's not a big deal.

        QPR fan who plays at my club was of the firm impression that the responsibility for kicking off was with Powell. I don't know if he knows any of the people involved, but seemed fairly confident that Powell was going to get the bullet before any official call was made on the CCTV footage.

          wouldn't dispute either, the Casey comment suggested Powell was being a halfwit and they didn't appreciate it, the fact he was on a 1 year deal with Wasps that wasn't already renewed suggested he wasn't going to be kept anyway.

              <H2>Andy Powell has signed for Sale Sharks, a week after his controversial departure from Wasps. </H2></DIV>

              The Wales No 8, who left Wasps “by mutual consent” following his suspension for his role in a bar-room brawl, has signed a two-year deal with the north-west <S&#079;NG>rugby union</S&#079;NG> club. </DIV>
              <DIV =sec&#111;ndPar>

              It is understood London Irish, Newcastle and rugby league clubs Wigan Warriors and Celtic Crusaders were also interested in signing the 29 year-old but Sale’s executive director of sport, Steve Diamond, moved quickly to secure Powell’s services. </DIV>
              <DIV =thirdPar>

              “It has been a tough couple of weeks for me but that has gone now and I am massively looking forward to a new challenge at Sale,” Powell told Telegraph Sport. “There was a bit of interest from other clubs but I have been really impressed with what I have seen at Sale.” </DIV>
              <DIV =fourthPar>

              Powell was involved in an altercation with football fans in a west London pub on April 18 that resulted in him being knocked unconscious and requiring 10 stitches in a head wound. </DIV>

              It has emerged that Tom Wood has been sleeping in an oxygen tent for the past three weeks in a bid to recover from a hairline fracture of his shin in time to play some part in Northampton’s bid for a Heineken Cup and Premiership double.
              <DIV =>

              Wood faces a scan on Thursday to determine his progress, although he is almost certainly ruled out of Saturday’s Premiership semi-final against Leicester.

              Northampton face Leinster in the Heineken Cup final in Cardiff on May 21. “There is still a chance Tom can play again this season,” said Northampton’s director of rugby, Jim Mallinder.

              Meanwhile, Saracens chief executive Edward Griffiths says the club fully expect their switch to Barnet Copthall Stadium to go ahead, despite admitting they may have to delay the move until September 2012.

              “We’re not in control of the planning application process but as we’ve taken a 99-year lease there, having to wait another six to 12 months before we move in isn’t the end of the world. We’ll bide our time,” he said. </DIV></DIV>

                Hmm, Sale have Sheridan and have signed Buckley and Powell,
                bit of a pattern of big lumps being signed here.

                  Steve Diamond knows his sh*t - looks like he's putting together a big pack of mutants that will be tough to beat in the north of England over winter. The 6'7" Scottish lock Fraser McKenzie is signed up according to this interview, which also mentions that the 6'5" Richie Vernon of Glasgow and Scotland is on his way south as well.

                  That's the makings of a very big pack.

                      Vernon is fairly light AFAIK.

                      Any pack with Sheridan, Buckley, McKensie and Powell has
                      serious size. Not sure about the collective IQ though.

                                I think they have gone for the right tactics for English rugby,
                                lots of bosh and not much finesse, but don't know how far
                                that lot will get them in Europe.
