    Stringer leaves for Saracens

Ireland scrumhalf Peter Stringer has agreed a short-term contract with English Premiership side Saracens, Munster announced today. Following a number of injuries, including scrumhalves Neil de Kock and Richard Wigglesworth, the Premiership champions approached Munster with the proposal of a three-month loan contract, which has been agreed. Stringer, who played for the Barbarians last Saturday said: "I believe I still have a lot to offer and want to continue to play at the highest level. ...

  • Heineken Cup Round One Review/ Round Two Preview

Heineken Cup Round One Review/ Round Two Preview

Relatively subdued start to the Heineken Cup this year with 41 Tries scored over the twelve matches, compared to 45 last year. Only one team, Saracens, achieved a try bonus (five last year) and seven teams got a losing bonus (seven last year). It's way too early to make any firm predictions but there was a number of happenings that may be significant, even at this early stage.

Pool One. Home wins for Scarlets and Munster with Northampton picking up what could be a very valuable losing...

  • Analysis of the Northampton Scrum

    Analysis of the Northampton Scrum

Peatbog dissects the Saint's scrum. They are very strong men in a very strong unit but a lot of what they do is illegal. If you notice, the vast majority of their scrum penalties come from going up on their loosehead side with the oppostion 'apparently' trying to walk round them and/or detaching(i'll come back to the detaching bit) but Northampton are the ones that actually induce this by their tactics. Step 1; The set-up. In the perfect world the 2 front rows would set up straight against each-...

  • 41 phases - glory is forever!

41 phases - glory is forever!

Examing the role of the scrumhalf in one of Munster's greatest ever escapes. O'Leary did well in the 40 phases, picked and went on several successful occasions to make crucial yards and sealed off when it looked like the ball would be lost. I think you'll find he got involved in rucks out of necessity pretty much most of the time. He did make a couple of poor decisions - the pass to O'Mahoney was the worst from him but plenty of other players did similar - on the whole I think TOL did very well all things considered, varied the speed and type of passing.Chambers made the most yards for me in that by the way, not Dougie, who ran at his own man to block the Northampton tackler (that could be arguable, I'm in two minds, Dougie's step probably did the more damage on second reflection) but that's a winger's job and he did very well. ...

  • The start of a new Heineken Cup adventure

The start of a new Heineken Cup adventure

Well it's that time of year again and for Munster the Heineken cup campaign begins this coming Saturday in Thomond Park when Munster host Northampton. Munster face into the next 2 weekends with their internationals back in harness having played 2 games in the red jersey since returning from the World cup. How much can be gleaned from those 2 games is hard to say. Players coming back into the side after being away for so many weeks and changes in the starting 15 between the 2 games means it is hard to call just who outside of the usual suspects will be in the squad come match day. Will the coaching staff spring any surprises, are all the usual suspects still in the mix? There are plenty of opportunities to see some new faces starting a Heineken cup game when you consider of the Munster Heineken Cup squad of 38 a total of 13 of those players have never played Heineken cup rugby with Munster. ...

  • Squeaky Bum Time approaches
    by mr chips
(By Piquet - not my work!)
    1/2

That time of the season so beloved of Sir Alex Ferguson is coming into view.

There will have to be major rule changes next year, given that of all the Premiership teams, only one, Saracens, are not in the bottom half of their Pool.
Peculiarly enough, of the ten fixtures in Round Four, only three had different results from the previous Round.
Significant gaps have developed in three of the pools and the first four casualties...

  • Piquet's Half Time Analysis
    by mr chips
    (1/2)
Right, we’re at the Halfway stage both in the Head to Head games and overall.

In the old days, if you lost your first match, you didn't win the Heineken Cup. Munster put a stop to that in 2006. Then, if you lost your first two matches, you were out. With the change in format to allow three rather than two Pool runners up go through, that went by the wayside two years ago courtesy of Bath.

Gerry Thornley in the Irish Times had an interesting article last week...
