Laulala In For The Injured Earls

Munster make just one change for the return game against Saracens in Vicarage Road on Sunday with Casey Laulala into the side in place of the injured Keith Earls.

Earls trained in Limerick on Tuesday but later complained of groin trouble and so withdraws with Laulala resuming the centre partnership he enjoyed with James Downey for the Racing Metro and Edinburgh games.
On Tuesday at the media briefing Rob Penney had expressed concern over several players, including Earls, but there was no further cause for concern after those players - Simon Zebo, BJ Botha, Dave O'Callaghan - came through training this morning in Cork
Luke O'Dea has been withdrawn from the British & Irish squad for tonight's game against Rotherham Titans (Musgrave Park 6.30) and travels to London tomorrow for a game that sees James Coughlan win his 100th cap.

    Munster: F Jones; D Howlett capt, C Laulala, J Downey, S Zebo; R O'Gara, C Murray; D Kilcoyne, M Sherry, BJ Botha; D O'Callaghan, D Ryan; Dave O'Callaghan, P O'Mahony, J Coughlan.

    Replacements: D Varley, W du Preez, S Archer, B Holland, P Butler, D Williams, I Keatley, L O'Dea.

That time of the season so beloved of Sir Alex Ferguson is coming into view.

There will have to be major rule changes next year, given that of all the Premiership teams, only one, Saracens, are not in the bottom half of their Pool.
Peculiarly enough, of the ten fixtures in Round Four, only three had different results from the previous Round.
Significant gaps have developed in three of the pools and the first four casualties...

Right, we’re at the Halfway stage both in the Head to Head games and overall.

In the old days, if you lost your first match, you didn't win the Heineken Cup. Munster put a stop to that in 2006. Then, if you lost your first two matches, you were out. With the change in format to allow three rather than two Pool runners up go through, that went by the wayside two years ago courtesy of Bath.

Gerry Thornley in the Irish Times had an interesting article last week...
