IRFU launches new first-aid programme for clubs
    Tuesday January 15 2008

The IRFU has launched a new first-aid programme for clubs and schools all over the country.

The scheme will provide comprehensive training for all general injuries and includes provision of and training in the use of defibrillators.

The IRFU's medical director, Dr Conor McCarthy, says the initiative represents the first time a detailed programme of this type has been introduced by an Irish sporting organisation.

Not so sure about those defibs. Bloody dangerous in the wrong hands and anyone trained to use them has to have a refresher every six months. The medical officer in carlow wont have one on the grounds.

I wish I had access to one six months ago when I was carrying out CPR on a young man. It could have prevented the 28 year olds death. There is nothing wrong with defibrilators when used by a trained person such as myself.

Spot on jmmcoy (I'm also trained to use them).

I'm sorry to hear that the young man didn't survive - a tragedy for all invovled.

All I'm saying is that in the hands of someone who thinks they're on ER they can kill someone all the quicker if a defib is not the correct choice as it is most of the time, then they can't be resucitated. If someone who's trained to use it thats fine, but leaving it in a crash glass box where anyone who can shout clear has access is just something i've a problem with them.

You obviously don't know how an Automated External Defibrilator works. It won't allow a shock unless it's analysis deems one necessary, it prompts you to push the button when necessary.

Hey i just took what my med officer up at the club told me to heart. GP and county coroner so i'd no reason to argue. Not trained and i wont touch one of the gorramn things. trained in first aid every year by the paras in the st malta ambulances but after that i leave it to them.

If they are so widely used whats the problem? The wrong hands point can only be put down to lazy people/club. I'm not sure but if your club tries I;m guessing they could get a coarse done on the basics in the clunhouse?

Would be all for it. Anything that may help save a life is of value. As long as there are bodies trained in it's use there is not a problem,

I suppose I just kind of disregarded them as car batteries with jumper leads. Can see the point in how they can save lives. I'd just be worried that the people trained would be supporting away or would have brought a team somewhere and a kid at u-14's say would have an epileptic fit or somesuch and everybody panics.

I'll look into it for the club though, suppose the point of this thread is to bring up the issue.
