    Why? Tells us your issues.

Looking at the email address on the contacts page, then I'd say hugh.farrelly@independent.ie would be a good place to start!
It happened, and I was there.

Enjoy his articles and it is good to see him writing regularly with the Indo which over the last few years I wouldn't have really bothered reading their rugby coverage.

Seems to have gone over the Ladies side since he signed for the Indo, plenty of gushing articles for them in the past few months.

I'm surprised your all saying the fella'a a good writer?!!!

I think hes really weak, him and ur man David Kelly. They give boring match reviews with a real lack of wit and intelligence.

Tony Ward on the other hand is immense, his columns, although somethings only twice weekly, are packed with little pieces of inside information, and really talks abouts more preesing issues, if you know what I mean.

Other wish I'd just read your man Gerry T in the times.

Not worth starting a thread for this.....

McGahan rises above vicious web of abuse
    By Hugh Farrelly
    Friday February 24 2012

THERE is an episode from 'The West Wing' which came to mind this week when charting the reaction to Munster coach Tony McGahan's decision to return to Australia at the end of the season.

In it, White House deputy chief of staff Josh Lyman is irritated by a post on an internet chat room set up in his honour and decides to respond.

"It's a bad idea," says his assistant.

    "Why?"

    "You don't know these people."

    "Neither do you."

"Yes, I do. Some of them haven't taken their medication, let's watch what happens now," she adds, as Lyman posts his response.

Minutes later, Lyman calls back his assistant.

"Something weird has happened," he says. "They don't seem to have taken my response in the spirit in which it was intended.

"It seems to be a very unusual social structure ... for instance, there's a leader who seems to pride herself on her organisational skills and a certain amount of discipline ... 'You posted in the wrong place ... Stay on topic, people ... Don't use capital letters ... I don't have time to tell you twice,' when clearly she does have time to tell us twice. It's 'Lord Of The Flies' in there."

That episode was made a decade ago, but not much has changed and there is a degree of pomposity among web contributors that never fails to amuse.

Spending the majority of your day online has to create a false sense of reality and you wonder, for example, how much solace the Houstons actually derived from 'Spud92', who posted a heartfelt message after the singer's death: "Our thoughts are with Whitney's family at this difficult time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

McGahan was arguably subjected to more online scorn than any other figure in Irish rugby over the past few years.

Posting your opinions online is great fun (hence all the smiley faces), but abuse tends to be the currency of choice and the air of impregnability that comes with being able to lurk behind false names allows it to be dispensed with vitriolic abandon.

With no sense of accountability, there is also the opportunity to swap positions at the drop of an index finger and McGahan was being roundly praised for his contribution to Munster rugby this week by the same crew that were viciously calling for his head a year ago.

McGahan was a straight shooter during his time in charge and hopefully ignored all the knee-jerk reaction that accompanies an era when everybody has a platform.

The Australian's only concern should have been with winning the respect and approval of his players and peers. He achieved that many times over and his reputation is evidenced by the fact he is now wanted by an Australian national side that would not have registered him a couple of years ago.

McGahan's response to last year's Heineken Cup pool exit has been well documented and the only pity is that he is leaving just as he laid the foundations for a bright future.

There is still an opportunity to realise that future before he departs and Munster will resume their Heineken Cup campaign in April backboned by an overwhelming desire to give McGahan a suitable send-off.

    gratitude

Even if that does not happen, and it could be a little soon in this squad's development, the province owes McGahan a tremendous debt of gratitude.

A debilitating injury list may have forced his hand, to an extent, when it came to giving youngsters their chance, but he had still shown a willingness to bring talent through and has been the greatest evolutionary influence on the province since Declan Kidney first came on board in the late 1990s.

It took some time but McGahan got to the pitch of what makes Munster work and a big-name overseas replacement such as Wayne Smith, although looking good on paper, would require time to get to the same level.

Whoever is appointed they will be subjected to the same sort of scrutiny as his predecessor.

It is a forlorn hope that this will arrive with balance attached across the board(s), but while it is impossible to completely ignore the internet adjudication process, it can be at least placed in perspective.

"What's wrong with them?" asked a distraught Lyman after his online experience went pear-shaped.

    "Nobody knows."

It is actually all true....I would have started a new thread for this.
Farrelly, the first time in awhile, has got it bang on.

Pity he left it till McGahan decided to move on. The cynic in me notes that Farrelly has been getting a bit of stick on this forum himself and I wonder if the above article may also reflect that?

Who and where are the crew who were viciously calling for his head a year ago?

Plenty of posters here have been very critical of team performance and calling for him to be replaced but to describe it as vicious is stretching it.

I think this is usual BS from him. He seems to forget we were playing very very badly for a long time, little direction, little passion. He then concedes that his hand was forced by and large bringing in younger players due to our nearly epic injury list.

This is the same coach who stuck with a forwards coach who was taking us backwards at a rate of knots, again until his hand was forced or so it would seem. We did the league twice which is a great achievement but remember we had a group that we really should have qualified from in the Heino last season and made a total mess of it. Where was the desire and passion against Quins in the semi of the losers cup?

I feel Mc is quite correct he is having a pop because he is been shown for the muppet he really is on this site. He should also remember most posters on here attend TP or MP on a regular basis we have not voted with our feet and stayed away, we have a right to say what we feel.

Farrelly has been getting stick by people who in general refuse to put their name to what they are saying.

    - This article originally said Rob Penney had missed out on the Munster coaching job. That information was incorrect.

He is more correct in a general way......The bullsh1t that is posted annonymously on sites like this attains far more credance than it is worthy of.

25K Munster supporters regularly fill TP,..... only a handfull post the kind of negative stuff he is referring to.

Its a double edged sword for me, Farrelly is right that a lot of the abuse can be misguided and a knee jerk reaction, but why would he refer to this site almost specifically if everything posted on here was bitter lunacy? Clearly there is a lot of debate and discussion that goes on which has huge relevance, (and I would wager that he reads a lot of it) why did he not mention that?

For every McGahan Begone thread posted there were usually several decrying that a bit of decency and reason be extolled. He has chosen a certain field of opinion and formed an article around it, cherry picked the most extreme of opinions as the stereotype, but then, extremism sells papers I guess.

I've always posted on here thinking to myself, would I say that to the persons face? If you haven't the balls to give it to them in the flesh you shouldn't have the balls to put it down here. Plus he didn't win too many friends when he fires out an article suggesting that one of our best forwards this season is thinking about moving to our bitterest rivals, it may have been his musing for the betterment of the Irish team but it went down like a lead balloon in this province.
    I am the million man.

Red herring IMO. I've never understood the view that people should take the utterly stupid risk of publishing their personal information in a public forum (and no, I don't use Facebook etc). I prefer to preserve my privacy and protect my identity - this doesn't mean I should give up the option to participate in an online forum. I wonder, if Farrelly or anyone else is so concerned about posters revealing their identity, then why don't they sign up here under their real names?

As an aside, I'm not a fan of the petty nicknames and sneering attitudes directed by some folk here towards our own players and staff, but if posters can't/won't moderate themselves then it becomes an issue for the site's moderators to address when it arises. That's not a dig at the moderators, just how I see it.

As for people changing their views, ("With no sense of accountability, there is also the opportunity to swap positions at the drop of an index finger and McGahan was being roundly praised for his contribution to Munster rugby this week by the same crew that were viciously calling for his head a year ago.") well of course that can happen. Any manager/coach lives or dies by their achievements. Declan Kidney was rightly lauded for bringing us to two HEC championships and for finally delivering a GS, and rightly criticised for Ireland's gradual slide since winning the GS. McGahan was rightly criticised for the insipid nature of our HEC exits during his tenure and particularly for last year's rudderless flailing. He has also been rightly praised for overseeing a resurrection of sorts in our fortunes this season (surely it would be ungracious not to acknowledge that?). I know it's been quoted on here before, but "When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do?"
