Terrible new tragedy for the poor family on top of previous ones. My godson played with him in Charleville and says he was a great young lad, very talented sportsman.

    Very, very sad

I see the replay is fixed for Friday night. Who's idea was that?

    Anthony Daly gets stuck in

DUBLIN hurling manager Anthony Daly has been involved in an on-pitch altercation at a minor match in Clare.

The scuffle happened during the Clare county minor A hurling final in Sixmilebridge, a closely fought game between Daly's former team Clarecastle and another local side, Kilmaley.

Niall Romer, a coach at Kilmaley, downplayed Saturday's incident, saying: "It was a small bit of an argy bargy. It was nothing really, you know.

"But look, it's part and parcel of the game. I'd rather it would kind of be let go."

However, he added: "All I want is for Daly to ring me and apologise."

Mr. P. Kavanagh of Mucker, Inniskeen, Co Monaghan wrote all about the phenomenon of the GAA's silly season many moons ago in the national press. Tis an institution at this stage.

Strange reaction to this from the Gardai, in that there has not been one. Photographic evidence in every major newspaper of an assault occurring and no move to make an arrest. A high profile court case could be just the spur that the GAA needs to solve it's issues with on and off field thuggery.

Has the incident been reported to An Garda Siochána?

I would have thought that an incident would not need to be reported to be investigated, especially when there is pictorial evidence that a crime may have occurred.

Seán Óg Ó hAilpín retires from inter-county GAA

Cork’s Seán Óg Ó hAilpín has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling. Ó hAilpín, who first retired in 2010 when was he frozen out of the Cork panel by then manager Denis Walsh, returned to the Rebels team last term under Jimmy Barry-Murphy. However, the Fijian-born left-wing back has now called time on his career once again.

In a statement issued through the Gaelic Players' Association, the Na Piarsaigh clubman said: "I wish to announce my retirement from inter-county hurling. This time it's for good.

"I always felt it was premature to end my career in 2010. It was great to get the opportunity this year to re-establish myself in the team and contribute in a meaningful way to Cork.
"As I close this chapter of my life, I look forward with enthusiasm to the new challenges and opportunities I may encounter.
"I would like to thank all of the Cork and GAA supporters around the country for their phenomenal support over the years.
"Particular thank you to all my family and special thanks to Siobhán [his wife].

"I do not wish to make any further comment on this matter.
    "Corcaigh abú. Rebels abú!"
Ó hAilpín had a 16-year career hurling for Cork, during which time he won five Munster Senior Hurling Championships (1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006) and three All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championships (1999, 2004, 2005), captaining the side to the third title in 2005.
He was also named Hurler of the Year and Gaelic Players' Association Hurler of the Year in 2004.

Legendary player. One of the best of his time. Will long be remembered.

Congratulations to Kilcormack-Killoughey on winning their first Leinster title, yesterday, two months after winning their first County Title.

Joe McGrath, former GAA coach to Cork footballers, as well as a number of other county teams, passed away on Wed 2nd January.

He coached the Cork senior team that was defeated by Dublin in the 1983 All-Ireland football semi-final replay Pairc Uí Chaoimh. He will probably be better remembered for giving his name to the McGrath Cup, the winter competition for senior county and college football teams in Munster.

A colourful legend of the game has announced his retirement from inter-county competition; John Mullane will no longer tog out for the Déise, he has given his last to the county and jersey. He was sometimes controversial but always gave it 100% and was in total respect of him a few years ago when Clare trounced Waterford and while a few of his team-mates seemed to give up Mullane hurled to the end despite being double marked and one could also say even provoked. I did notice that every Clare player did come over and shake his hand when the game did end though.

Never won an All-Ireland but has plenty of other honours. Will still hurl with his club it seems, but he'll be missed when Waterford start the Munster campaign later this year. Good luck to him in any case. I enjoyed seeing him play; I'm sure Waterford people really got behind him. he'll be missed.

Was devastated when I heard the news. We will be a far weaker team without him. Loved by all in Waterford and somewhat a pantomime villain in the majority of other counties. The game will miss him immensely

Pantomime Villain he was but as a Clare man I used to love and hate when Clare were against him, he was a dirty player at times but only gave what he got and was a superb player who on his day was up there with the Shefflins and Cannings of the modern game and as was said already he never gave up. Problem with Waterford was/is there aren't many like Mullane around who have the mentality to just keep plugging away regardless of score

Mullane was a fine player and wholehearted. Became a bit of a 3 to 4 points a game player who didnt really threaten goals in recent years. Waterford will be far weaker without him but then again Waterford are weak anyway at the moment. Gone are the days of excitement and heartbreak of the 2000 to 20010 era. Those Deices teams played exciting off the cuff hurling but were just short that something. We wont see it again for a while.

terrific player. Look he knows waterford aren't going to win an all-ireland in the next 5 years. So he obviously feels the ship has sailed. And he's probably right.

The one that got away. His parents are Banner folk. He would have a good one to ease the transition of the U21's. Apparently the rest of the Waterford team were perplexed when he kissed the badge on his jersey in a defiant gesture to the Clare fans as he wire a Clare jersey all the time on training.
