Indeed I think Cork is a fine place, and am a supporter of the 'single venue training in Cork' camp though I live now in Limerick.
We are the apex of Gaelic football and that is the end of it - more players on the team of the century, more players on the team of the Millennium, more All Irelands, more National Leagues, winners of the totemic Finals in both the centenary and Millennium years......................We are the standard by which other football teams are assessed. You may not like that, but it is the truth. . As for Spillane, he is a blustering clown and it recognised at home as such - his efforts to be appointed to the Kerry job are always treated with some merriment before being filed away.
As for Saturday, you fight fire with fire. Not nice, not pretty but real life all the same.
I dont have any real issue with Kerry other than they being our biggest rivals which is only natural. Dara O'Se irked the life out of me with his bullish antics over the years but by God would I love to have him in my team, the same goes for many other players. My issue is with the sytle of football employed by them over the past number of years and what also gets me going is the fawning over the "purist Kerry way" when you look at the diving the other night (Cooper has serious previous in this and could easily go toe to toe with Drogba in that respect), the murderously dangerous "tackles" ala Tadgheen and the young lad Curtin last Saturday and the perfection of "puke football" which has now been upgraded to "defensive intensity".

You go on about being "the apex of Gaelic football and that is the end of it", Cork are at the apex of GAA with more AI's than any other county in both sports even winning senior AI's in the same year and regular double contenders. I could go dragging up stats on All Stars and the like but you know what I'm getting at.

I'm writing this in Kerry trying to look out through the lashing rain at Brandon, there is a lot to be admired about Kerry but can we leave the purist holier than thou rubbish out of it. Last Saturday was a disgrace to the game. Tyrone set their stall out from the start almost 10 years ago and for me began the winning at absolutely any cost mentality which has driven the game into the ground. I have little to no time for them, their behaviour the other night was equally as bad as Kerry's. They have some real nasty spiteful players chief of whom is Peter the Great though he no longer plays (ask any club player in Tyrone what he got away with due to his county status). They have fine talents too like McGuigan and Sean Cavanagh.

People are lightening quick to condem Tyrone but snail like slow to do the same with Kerry. They leapt all over Donegal last year yet Dublin were equally as bad over the last 2 years regularly having 13 men in their own half but this never elicited a mere mention. Crossmaglen Rangers won the best AI Club title in years this year playing a fast moving pure football with 15 players staying in their positions and tatics not even mentioned, I pray that they can build on that as it will only encourage teams to go back to that style again.

Of course, there is only one County that has had an All Star in every position on both teams.

    From the Tyrone GAA website.

One GAA Family United in Respect

Long after the thousands had left Fitzgerald Stadium last Saturday evening our Tyrone team was getting ready for a bitter journey home. Around 500 Kerry people remained outside the changing area – men and women, old and young. As our people started to board their coach a ripple of applause met them. That ripple grew and grew and for long minute after long minute just went on and on and on.
When Mickey Harte appeared, a cheer of support went up. As the coach headed down through Killarney hundreds on the pavements took over where the others left off, warmly applauding Tyrone. There is no doubt that Ireland lost a lot and took a lot of wrong turns in the last few years. But if you wanted your faith in decency, respect, honour and dignity restored, then Killarney at about eight o’clock last Saturday evening was the place to be.
    Inspirational. Unforgettable. Classy.

Waterford should have won that....Eoin McGrath had the winning of it in his hands and dropped it. Waterford had the better players for most of the game but Cork had pace in the last 10 mins when it counted. Cork will trouble Galway but will need to improve from that. Big step up in the standard in the second game. KK are no longer invincible.

The selection of Shane Casey still baffles me!! Criminal for Waterford to leave a game 6 point turnaround in last 10minutes!!!

Cork played well in the first and last 10 min but were pretty poor in between. If it wasn't for the experience of Sean Óg and Gardiner when he came on, I don't think we would have won. If the Cork that played Tipp earlier on the campaign show up against Galway then its game on, if todays Cork turn up though Galway will win. Cork have been poor since that Tipp game but are still winning which has to bode well. Either way whatever happens in the semi, this campaign has been a success for Cork and JBM.

There was a preview article in the IT yesterday:
How Cork’s half forwards cope will be one of the match’s principal criteria. Cork’s championship has been a flurry of inserting a large key-ring into a variety of locks and trying to remember which ones fit, while coming to a dawning realisation that some fit better on particular days than others.
which summed up a lot about how the year has gone for Cork. I can't believe that there has been a side which has played so many different players in one season - particularly one with no suspensions and very few injuries.
Our best game in the championship was probably the one against Tipp that we lost, since then we have been panicking, JBM seems to be of the mind that if you play poorly, you will be dropped and then placed at the back of the queue of those who can play in your position.
I think we could still find ourselves hammered one of these weeks, and yet we could beat Galway first.

I thought Cork were very lucky yesterday.I thought we were blown out of it for half the match. To me it seemed like our subs bench saved us and also showed that JBM has done the right thing this season blooding in players to create some reasonable strength in depth. We won't win anything this year but i am far more hopeful for the next few championship seasons.

The Cork subs seemed to be far more driven when they came on, even though he had a poor wide Moylan kept moving
and was a threat in the inside line.. Galway will be hard beaten but if Cork show more hunger youd never know

Not sure how to take LKs exit. Proud that they fought, but KK looked in second gear and still romped home.

Has rugby had an effect in the pool of players we'd normally pick on? Are lads who would normally play for the likes of Na Piarsaigh playing rugby exclusively now?

    Tough times again.

I think Limerick are on the right track and I'd disagree. They have come a long way in two championship seasons since the shambles of 2010.Remember Cork got slaughtered by 14 points 10 weeks ago by KK in the league final. KK are capable of doing that to nearly every decent team in the Championship.

Whoever got KK after the slaughtering they recieved from Galway was in for a tough afternoon,it just happened to be Limerick.

If Munster had a conveyor belt of Limerick lads pouring into the team then it might be a definite possibility, but the scarcity of young limerick players on the Munster team ATM is worrying. Now, if you were a 17 or 18 year old limerick youngfella offered a car under your arse, a gaff to live in and wages for playing rugby it's be hard to turn it down. Limerick Gaa cannot offer those terms to any promising young athlete.

Tipp as a comparison, are kicking our arse in both sports.

Well Fitzy, they aren't playing for Munster, and judging by the AIL they arent playing there either.

    1. My personal comment at you was done in temper and was out of order - I apologise unreservedly.
    2. The Kerry V Tyrone match was the logical conclusion of an increasingly acrimonious and bitter rivalry which has curdled in a way that is ugly, and does little credit to either team. Hope the sheer nastiness of Killarney ends it and brings sanity but I doubt it. Kerry has never been behind the door in the physical stakes. But it not our primary mode of football expression, our default mode if you will. I believe a change is needed in overall football tactics and approach, and that change will only IMO be arrived at by the GAA endorsing a 'sin bin' and awarding extra points/reward for points kicked from open play out beyond the 30 mtr area. That would hamper this absurd personal 'professional' fouling and negate having all your players behind the ball by being hit from long range. Not a perfect panacea but a good start. A sin bin and red card for constant pulling and dragging.

    3. Kerry v Donegal has the potential to be a fine match, due mainly to McGuinness broadening his approach. His objective last year was to stop the rot and build some results, this year (I hope) he will be more constructive. We are probably the best placed to actually play Donegal as we have some players who can shoot accurately from distance and build a lead.
Cork have the best draw they could get (Laois apart) which they will need after unfairly and absurdly having no serious football since beating us about 7 weeks ago.
    4. Galvin is a brilliant player playing his last Championship IMO, his gowling and 'fashion' diversions sometimes leading people to overlook his tactical astuteness, total commitment while playing and his passing/shooting (among the best today). He is one of a kind, for better or worse, and while I can see the silliness of his activities, he is different and his own man (like Donal Og in his own way).
    5. Hope we play football against Donegal because only that style, played by whoever, will rescue the game from the fitness Nazis who are ruining it. Dublin are case in point. Their sheer fitness, gained by an insane schedule of twice day training, kept them in the 2011 final against a better footballing team, who did not finish them off when able to and who wilted physically when the Dubs still had energy to burn. And that was never a free! But them's the breaks. And football needed that more than another Kerry win.

Part of Armagh issues this year of failure by them was Paddy O'Rourke failing to adopt Cross style so they opted out in effect.

Good to see Cork finally beating Waterford after a few years. If you can beat a decent team like them playing badly its a good sign. No AI in them as they're too all over the place in selection. Galway are incredibly flakey so can't be hailed as a top side after beating Kilkenny, certainly a game they can win. Getting to an AI final would be a very good spring board for the next few years.

Cadogan was apparently on antibiotics up to yesterdays game, hopefully will be grand for next week. Cork have cancelled club games so have been training straight since the Clare game and training well from a few accounts i've heard. I'd be quietly confident of a big performance to lay down a marker. They'll need to 3 big games to win it this year.

Jeez, men, 'tis like being a supporter of Millwall soccer club. So here goes (ahem, clearing throat)
The Boys of Barr na Sraide

    Sigerson Clifford
Oh, the town that climbs the mountains, and looks out upon the sea
At sleeping time or waking, 'tis there I long to be
To walk again those kindly streets, the place where life began
With the boys of Barr na Sraide who hunted for the wren
With cudgels stout they roamed about in search of the dreolin
We searched for birds from every furze, from Litir to Dooneen
We danced for joy beneath the sky, life held no print nor plan
When the boys of Barr na Sraide went hunting for the wren
And when the hills were bleeding, and the rifles were aflame
To the rebel homes of Kerry the Saxon strangers came
But the men who dares the Auxies and who fought the Black and Tans
Were those boys of Barr na Sraide who hunted for the wren
But now they toil in foreign soil where they have made their way
Deep in the heart of London town and over in Broadway
And I am left to sing their deeds, and praise them while I can
Those boys of Barr na Sraide who hunted for the wren
And here's a health to them tonight, wherever they may be
By the groves of Carham River or the slopes of Bi na Ti
John Daly and Batt Andy, and the Sheehans, Con and Dan
And the boys of Barr na Sraide who hunted for the wren
And when the wheel of life runs out, and peace comes over me
Just take me back to that old town between the hills and sea
I'll take my rest in those green fields, the place where life began
With those boys of Barr na Sraide who hunted for the wren

Cheers IC, I couldnt agree more with what you have wrote...even the bit about Galvin!! Seriously, he is a player who would be welcomed with open arms into every team in the country but has on occassion over stepped the mark and I suppose the oppositions' player who grates you the most is usually the one you'd want in your own team, think McCaw for example.

The Kerry/Donegal game will be facinating, I personnally think Donegal are the team to beat this year, the winner will definately come from our side of the draw and will certainly deserve the crown if they do, no "but sure 'twas an easy draw" ala Brolley but there is a discussion for a different day . Strangely RTE have opted not to show the 2 games on Sunday preferring the Dubs and Mayo for some mad reason leaving TV3 licking their chops at our game and Kerry's.
