Thread: Restaurants

This is probably the wrong thread but didnt want to start a new one, there's a coffee morning in the Clongibbon House Hotel in Mitchelstown on Thursday morning from 10-1pm in aid of the Irish Kidney Association if anyone is in the area or passing through. A good friend of mine is on the waiting list to avail of their services so all help is appreciated, thanks.

Just back from my latest visit, Taz - fantastic food - and a very tasty blended wine called Octandre - fresh from paradise. It gets a ROG rating on the Glorob scale of superlatives!

(Willie Pa's is due to re-open at end of the month, incidentally)

If you like Indian food, try the Moghul in Bantry. It's been recently recently renovated and is really quite nice and pocket friendly. I was speaking to the owner tonight and he also owns the Bollywood restaurant in Rochestown which I believe is quite good also, though I have never eaten there.

I had the Chicken Vindaloo and it was a fine fiery dish- I also have a new arsehole as a result which is a small price to pay. (I have several anyway and one more won't make a difference or so my proctologist told me.) I really must learn to eat more slowly and drink more quickly. By the way, you can buy your favourite vintage in the off licence across the road and bring it on board. Very civilized, I must say.

I too have eaten in Willie Pa's and the food is fine, wholesome and reasonably priced but the place reminded me of a large barn. Maybe the new place may be different and I wish him the best of luck- tough break with the fire and all that. His spot is hugely popular in these parts.

Went to Kirby's Ballinhassig today for lunch, outstanding . Beautiful Chowder full of fish, fantastic goats cheese and red onion tartlet and an excellent warm chicken and bacon salad.

Eco is good as already mentioned but it can be tricky to get a table.

Not Douglas, but, there's a new fish place in the Clarion in town, Oysters, very very good. Was in there a few weeks ago.

Eco is ok but the Maitre D is a complete knob and just refuse to give him anymore business. On the N71Poachers is good but sooo expensive. The Viaduct is muck !

Stayed in Gregans Castle for a few days recently, good food but no choice taster menu only on both nights. I quite like a taster menu but not two nights on the trot. Very disappointing for what is supposed to be a good establishment, I would have accepted it far easier had it been mentioned on their web site.

Last stayed there about 3 years ago I think it has gone a long way backwards in that time.

Anyone been to Tuscany (either Annacotty or Ballina) recently? Had a look at their menu (on-line) and can't make up my mind if it's a regular restaurant with a few Italian bits tacked on on (rather expensively) or if it's worth bringing someone there being good/somewhat different.

Anyone got experience or feed back? - pleez.....

Or would I be better off going for a real eytie (La Piccola) in the centre?

  13. #493
I've only ever been to the Annacotty branch and found it pretty good, if a little pricey. I have only been to La Piccola once and would never go back, it is to Italian food what Herod was to child minding. Bored waitresses and boring food.

The new Italian on Mount Kenneth, Casa Nostra is quite good.

Yep, thought the menu a tad pricey, good to hear the nosh is OK.

Am surprised on La Piccola - haven't eaten there for a while but used to dine there regularly (lunch and evening) and found their food excellent and authentic (used to live in Italy) - e.g. real veal for their saltimbocca. Was way better than some better publicised places. Am disappointed to hear it ain't as was.........

Might try Casa Nostra; you know about Cosa Nostra? .....

Pricey for what it is, too much on the menu, maybe when they get the unit next door they'll be able to figure out what they want and who they're catering for. Need the families' business to survive and drop the prices a bit. Goosers has the tourist market taken, Flanagans has the location, Cherry Tree has the fine dining. They need to find their niche otherwise will fail like what was there before

I ate there last year and it was, hands-down, the best meal I've had in Ireland. Absolutely superb, definitely Michelin star standard. However the chef, Mickael Viljanen, left earlier this year and moved to the Greenhouse restaurant in Dublin so I guess the high standards weren't maintained. Pity.

Had a great bit of grub in Brasserie Mark Anderson (Killaloe/2milegate) over the w-end.

All went for the fixed menu and every dish was memorable. Most of the stuff is either fish or game based and really good fine dining. Had wabbit starter and hake main - both done to perfection as were the others courses. Not overly expensive either (€32 fixed menu) and the wine list is good and not too pricey. First time there and won't be the last, but you'd better book (it's smallish). Would recommend it, certainly a special occasion place.

He's shut his shop in Killaloe, no doubting his abilities in the kitchen, though can be a prickly personality at times

Late, I know, but: I'm a big fan of Nakon Thai. Love Thai food, and theirs is excellent.

Yep, pretty intense personality there; reckon it's the perfectionist in him always taking over. Was seated where we had view of him/kitchen and he was so engrossed and involved in most of the cooking and all the plating. Reckon he sent one or 2 bits back, but if he's aiming high maybe that's how it's done. Spoke to him as we left and it was the first smile I had noticed; wouldn't have liked to have interrupted him in mid-stream.....! In any case I think he's happier and more at home in the kitchen rather than behind a counter and till.

In saying that was a little surprised to hear that he shut the shop (he had a clientele) and then (later...) heard he had opened up in 2milegate. And from what I've experienced (1 visit I know...) and heard I'm looking forward to going back there again.

The dinner box with gravy (best after a gallon of Guinness incidentally) is pure haute cuisine.
